Toronto Maple Leafs News & Rumors: McKenna, Goalie Review & Marlies – Hockey Writers – Toronto Maple Leafs

It’s one of those moments between the Toronto Maple Leafs—not quite action, not quite quiet, but certainly a lot of speculation. There’s no shortage of storylines right now, from offseason opportunities to real concerns about the program as it stands. Add in the farm sorting action, and there’s a lot to keep up with.

The tricky part is that everything feels a little set up. With a new general manager (GM) yet to be named, the Maple Leafs are in a holding pattern. Big decisions are coming—but not yet. For now, it’s about observing, wondering, and studying the tea leaves.

First thing: What If the Hockey Gods Smiled Another Time?

Let’s start with the fun, but unlikely. What if the Maple Leafs somehow win the draft lottery and get the first pick? It sounds far away, but we’ve seen things we don’t know. The last time it happened, they went with Auston Matthews—and that worked out pretty well.

When lightning strikes twice, the name to watch is Gavin McKenna. He just finished his NCAA season with Penn State. He is a top consensus pick and could change the franchise. Throw him into a forward group that already includes Matthews, William Nylander, and John Tavares, and suddenly things look very different. Long shot. But it’s the kind of long shot that can turn a franchise around overnight.

Item Two: The Maple Leaf Crease Is Still a Question Mark

Back to reality for a moment. The offensive situation for the Maple Leafs remains unsettled. The numbers weren’t good enough this season, and more importantly, the consistency. This wasn’t a game-winning position—it was one that often left the team scrambling.

There was good. Dennis Hildeby showed promise in limited action, and Joseph Woll had instances where he looked like a legitimate starter. But it was hard to ignore. Anthony Stolarz got wins but didn’t fully earn the trust, and the depth options didn’t stick when called upon.

Bottom line: if this team is going to compete, they may need more confidence. One thing it couldn’t say was how much poor play in front of the goalie affected their numbers. Maybe more.

Thing Three: Spouses Get a Real Test

Over in the American Hockey League (AHL), the Toronto Marlies were brought back to earth. After winning 5-0 in the first game, they were shut out 4-0 by the Rochester Americans. That loss tied the series.

Konsta Helenius made his mark with a goal and an assist, while Devon Levi was outstanding, stopping everything thrown his way. Artur Akhtyamov couldn’t match him this time, and the Marlies couldn’t generate the kind of offense they needed. It’s a reminder that playoff hockey can turn around quickly—and adjustment is everything.

What’s Next for Maple Leaves?

Right now, everything comes back to one thing: the front office. Until the Maple Leafs name their new GM, it’s hard to see any big moves happening. Trade talks, roster changes, even decisions about the crease—all are on hold. But that shouldn’t take too long. Once that appointment is made, things can move quickly.

For now, the focus is quietly on development. How the Marlies are making the news—not just for the playoff run, but what it means for the pipeline. Players pursuing careers, opportunities to gain confidence—that’s when some real progress can happen while a big club waits. For now, for a while. But it feels like a lull before something important.
