The PING Golf iron range has something for everyone

I recently took a trip to the PING Golf Proving Grounds in Phoenix, Arizona to check out a little of its full lineup of 2026 offerings. After our visit to Fully Fit in December, I’ve been looking to spend more time with some of their offerings that I haven’t been able to take more than a few swipes at. PING’s line of irons is solid, and one of the most ‘complete’ systems on the market. Let’s break down the list and sort out which instruments suit which style of player and who would benefit most from each design.
PING i240 – Cavity back ‘plus’
The PING i240 is a unique instrument, in a category where PING has definitely set itself apart. It’s not a true backhand iron, that would be the PING Blueprint S, but it’s also not a player grade iron; such as PING i540. It sits somewhere in the middle. It’s a great choice for players looking for a traditional cavity back shape and size, with a traditional loft structure, but still requiring a little help. The i240 aims to provide precision to players who want a little control over their flight, but with an MOI package that showcases a very useful class of irons.

With its traditional rear cavity shape, PING took the performance of the i240 one step above previous generations by giving a significant boost to the MOI. On the back of the iron you will see the new ABS badge, which helps them save more than eight grams in weight, which is distributed around the iron to increase the MOI without increasing the size or shape of the platform. They also added an elastomer insert in the cavity that helps create a smooth feel and sound from the cast 413 stainless steel. For the better golfer looking for more support than a traditional cavity back like the Blueprint S, the i240 is the perfect choice within the PING range. If it’s good enough for a guy like Viktor Hovland, it’s good enough for your wallet.
PING i240 Custom Irons
The Tour-inspired i240 improves upon our popular Players technology, offering increased forgiveness and control, a look and feel that will appeal to a wide range of skill levels. It’s PING’s premier golfer model, giving golfers more control and the ability to consistently hit their distance numbers and park the ball closer to the hole. The new ABS badge in the original cavity-back design is lighter at 8.5g, and combined with the elastomer insert allows for more perimeter scaling to increase MOI during long irons. This helps achieve an 11% reduction in scattering. The badge and insert contribute to a more desirable sound and soft, responsive feel from the 431 stainless steel head.

PING i540 – Some speed help for the better player
The i540 is a special instrument. It competes in a truly unique market place for the premium player who wants great looks but may be losing speed. These are the top club champions on your local course, or in my case, the guys who take my money every weekend, despite being twice my age. They’re also a great option for players who need some turf performance like the i240 but don’t quite have the punch to back it up. The i540 is sitting here in a really nice bucket. It gave me almost a club worth of speed compared to the i240, while adding launch and keeping the same turning window.

When testing the system, the i540 stood out. I commented while working with PING WRX Master Fitter James Lee that it almost felt too easy. I’ll have to balance my grades a bit along the way, and maybe do some hacking at the end of the bag, but playing the i540 felt… okay. It felt like something I might end up doing, just because the data showed that the iron was really working for me. The only downside in my testing is that they are actually quite fast. 130 mph on a 7-iron is pretty slow speed, and that balance of speed and distance can make some creative shots very difficult. But this instrument is not made for me. It’s built for a crowd that sits on a nice single-digit handicap but doesn’t throw it as fast as it used to.

When we visited Fully Fit both Johnny Wunder and Wadeh Maroun agreed. Wadeh was VERY close to bagging them, but since our first day of the trip was at PING, he basically based all of his installation on the benefits he saw in the i540, and all week he was testing hollow-body irons over the back hole or forged options. Johnny jumped on board, too. Both guys are single digit swing golfers and know what they need from their swings. But, in their own admission, they lost a bit of speed compared to where they might have been in previous years. A hollow body, high-tech offering like the i540 maintains good visibility behind the ball and allows the better player to worry more about making a good swing than their clubs being able to match their current game.
PING G440 – In-game development
The instruments on the line can be difficult. Every company makes game-enhancing style irons that share the name of their iron woods within the current lineup, but it’s a difficult category to find a balance. Ensuring that an iron performs well for the majority of golf while still looking, feeling and sounding good seems to involve constant trade-offs. If there’s one thing the G440 won’t trade on, it’s performance. In the video test with Lee you can see how much fun it is to play the G440’s instruments. For lack of a better term, they are dummy proof. The biggest compliment I can give to anything in this regime is that it’s easy. As long as you communicate in a respectful manner, the club will work for you.
PING G440 Custom Instruments
The G440 iron is a distance-driven design best suited for golfers who need game-enhancing technology and prefer a golfer-style impact. The increased ball speed comes from the narrow face and low CG/back position – resulting in high launch, long range shots with stopping power. SPEED AND FORGIVENESS Thin face flexes for more ball speed, saving weight to increase MOI. LOW CG SYSTEM Short face lowers CG for more ball speed, higher launch. SAFE PLAYERS Shallow face length and short blade length. PREMIUM PERFORMANCE Four-piece, chrome-plated badge increases flex, dampens vibration.

I always like to say that the G440 is aimed at the casual gamer. Someone who knows what they’re doing and has a repetitive swing, but doesn’t practice much and wants a set of irons that will last a long time and consistently produce. My dad, who is on the last generation of G430 irons, is a perfect example. He doesn’t play much, usually only on the weekends I can visit, but he knows what he’s doing with his swing and just wants to be there and have fun without mechanical issues getting in the way. Everything I’ve set up in his bag is about ease of use, and the hardware is no different. You can get away with an off-center claim, they still feel good about the category they fall into, and it helps make the round go by without extra stress. In addition, PING continues to make sure it looks good on the bag, behind the ball, and in the hands as you hit the fairway.

PING G740 – All the help you want
If the G440 is for the repeat player who wants stress-free and easy rounds, the G740 is for any player who wants all the help PING can give. The G740 is a large and powerful instrument designed for one thing: forgiveness. This is actually a key difference maker in the lineup. The G740 is not the metal is built with the advantages of speed in mind. For me it was as fast as the i540 or G440, all of which sat at about 130 mph ball speed from the 7-iron. What the G740 offers is forgiveness.

It feels like you can hit the ball anywhere on this iron and get away with it. It makes the G440 seem unforgiving, which is saying a lot. With the 740, the goal is high-tech performance and good looks. This is a true “play the game because you enjoy it” kind of thing. Older players who just want to keep swinging, younger players who want to get into the game, or beginners who would like a non-invasive entry point into the game will all appreciate the forgiving benefits of the PING G740 irons.
Most importantly, resilience.
One of my favorite lines I was told for the first time by PING’s Marty Jertson was “PING is an engineering company that makes golf clubs.” Part of that philosophy is that every single golfer should fit their new golf clubs with an approved machine, like True Spec. PING chooses not to sell their equipment directly to the customer to really reinforce this belief. As an engineering company there is an understanding that making tools work for the right player at the right time requires some adjustments. There is no “one size fits all” offered at PING, just the ultimate combination of equal parts you.
