Tigers Extend Kevin McGonigle – MLB Trade Rumors

The Tigers announced Wednesday that they have agreed to an eight-year, $150MM extension with the outfielder Kevin McGonigle. The contract starts next season — he still earns the league’s minimum salary through 2026 — and runs through 2034. McGonigle, a client of Vayner Sports, can buy an additional $10MM in total through the escalator series, giving the deal a maximum value of $160MM from 2027-34. Detroit, one of the few teams to publicly disclose the terms of its players’ contracts, also provided a year-by-year breakdown of the deal.

McGonigle, 21, takes home a $14MM signing bonus that will be paid up front. He will earn $1MM in 2027, $7MM in 2028, $16MM in 2029, $21MM in 2030, $22MM in 2031 and $23MM annually from 2032-34. The contract caps what would have been McGonigle’s second to sixth years in control of his original club and gives the team control over his first three seasons of free agency. There are no options in the contract, but the upward steps could increase his 2032-34 salaries to $25MM, $26MM and $28MM, respectively. McGonigle’s deal does not include the usual no-trade protections, but he will be owed a $5MM share bonus if he is traded to another club at any time.

McGonigle entered the season as the No. 2 consensus prospect behind the Pirates shortstop Connor Griffin and now it has almost quickly surpassed Griffin’s extension to set the record for a young player with the least service in the major leagues. Griffin inked a nine-year, $140MM contract last week. Julio RodríguezThe $210MM contract is technically the largest ever for a player who lasted less than a year, but that contract was signed in late July of his first season, when he was already an All-Star and a surprise runner for Rookie of the Year. Griffin and McGonigle may be in the same service class, but the context surrounding their extensions differs slightly from that of Rodríguez’s deal.

Selected 37th overall in the 2023 draft, McGonigle hit the ground running as an 18-year-old in pro football. He slashed .315/.452/.411 in 21 games following the 2023 draft and rose to elite prospect status over the next two seasons. McGonigle hit .309/.401/.452 with more walks than strikeouts as a 19-year-old headed to the Class-A ranks in 2024. Last year, he absolutely demolished High-A pitching (.372/.462/.648) in 36 games before being promoted to scarcely A, where he reached scarcely A. McGonigle was one of the youngest players in Double-A but still converted a slash of .254/.369/.550 in 46 games.

Throughout the offseason, it was unclear whether McGonigle would be considered a member of the Opening Ceremony or whether the organization would send him to Triple-A for development. A strong spring performance quickly dispelled any doubts, however. McGonigle hit .250/.411/.477 in 56 plate appearances. As he had done at almost every stop for the kids, he left more often than he left. The Tigers carried him in the Opening Day program to start the season, and he split the first few weeks of the year between third base and shortstop while slashing .311/.417/.492 with 11 walks against just eight strikeouts in 72 plate appearances.

Looking at McGonigle’s repeated ability to not only avoid hits but also draw walks at such a high rate highlights why he has such a high floor. Add in above-average speed and raw power that you wouldn’t really expect from someone 5’9″ and 187 pounds, and McGonigle has the makings of a perennial All-Star that could draw some MVP consideration during his senior years.

Scouting reports question where his defensive home will be, but he has worked to improve his shortstop defense and looked solid there in spring training and the first few weeks of the season. Whether he lands at shortstop, third base or second base, McGonigle’s instincts for hitting and a strong array of offensive tools should give him more than enough bat to fit anywhere on the diamond.

More to come.
