Tottenham have been given a ‘positive’ injury update as another star returns to training with Bentancur

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has been given another ‘positive’ injury update and the impending return of midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur.

Cristian Romero is out for the rest of the season but Bentancur is coming back

Spurs have received the unpleasant news that captain Cristian Romero will miss the rest of the season after sustaining an injury against Sunderland last weekend.

The Argentinian, who De Zerbi has tipped as a key player alongside Mohammed Kudus, now joins the Ghanaian on Spurs’ long-term treatment table as both players see the campaign out of reach.

Romero was tackled by Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey’s Antonin Kinsky during the 1-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light, with both men requiring treatment.

The Czech striker managed to carry on with a bandage on his head, but unfortunately the same could not be said for Romero, who has been forced to watch Tottenham’s struggle from the sidelines.

De Zerbi faces another key test when his former club, Brighton, visit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this weekend as Spurs sit two points clear of 17th-placed West Ham in the relegation zone.

In a much-needed boost for the Lilywhites and their new manager, it has now been revealed that Bentancur has returned to training and could be available to play a role against Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

In good news for Spurs, there was an encouraging update on another injured star from Sky Sports this week.

James Maddison returns to coaching Tottenham with Rodrigo Bentancur

According to the streaming giant, playmaker James Maddison, who has been sidelined since Spurs’ pre-season tour of Asia last summer, has returned to training as part of his long-term recovery from an ACL injury.

The England man has been sorely missed by the north Londoners, and their lack of creativity in his absence has been a key theme of their 2025/26 pitch nightmare.

However, while it is good news for his recovery that he is back on the training pitch, it may be a while before we see him play a real game.

“I can see James Maddison is back in training, he’s been out since he injured his ACL before the season,” said Sky Sports, referring to one of Hotspur Way’s correspondents.

“There was pressure on me, this is part of his return to the team, so don’t expect to see him in the match day squad anytime soon.

“However, it is good news about his recovery.”

Interestingly, former interim manager Igor Tudor has said he hopes to see Maddison back in action before the end of the season, so he could still be one to watch from Spurs’ point of view.

The 29-year-old scored 12 goals and provided 11 assists in all competitions in Ange Postecoglou’s final season in charge, including goals against the likes of Man City, Man United and Liverpool.

Maddison is a big game, a key creator in the heartbeat of the Spurs midfield, so his return soon would be a big boost for De Zerbi.
