Arsenal are launching a move to sign a £100m star

Premier League champions, how good does that feel Arsenal fans? The Gunners enjoyed almost a week of celebrating after Manchester City lost to Bournemouth last Tuesday.

However, for just a few days, the celebrations have to be stopped. The Champions League final awaits. Surely they can’t do twice as well in football? Time will tell.

Either way, it’s time for Mikel Arteta and Andrea Berta to take advantage of the situation they’re in. They are the champions of England and European finalists; there won’t be a better time to capitalize on their status as one of the top sports when it comes to the transfer market.

Don’t expect the Gunners to go crazy this summer but they are in a fantastic position to attract some of the best talent in the world.

Arsenal make their move to sign a £100m star

Last summer the Gunners spent around £250m to bring new talent to the Emirates Stadium. It was Berta’s first window.

Whether or not they will be great again is up for debate but they will have to sell to do so. Earlier it was reported that Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri could be on the chopping block. They represent pure profit in the PSR days. Lewis-Skelly has certainly secured his future at Arsenal but Nwaneri’s future is less certain.

The likes of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard are also possibilities, especially with reports linking Arteta’s men with the likes of Bradley Barcola and Rafael Leao.

However, there could be room for a new striker. Reports over the past few months have detailed Arsenal’s interest in Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez and things are heating up in the race to land the Argentinean at the Metropolitano.

This was said by Spanish journalist Pedro Fullana, via Sport Witness, who revealed on Monday that negotiations are still ongoing between different parties. He said: “There have been consultants linked to PSG and Arsenal who have inquired with Atletico.”

Fulana continued: It is clear that the club knows that if all this happens, it is because Julian’s agents, and therefore Julian himself, have given the green light to discussions about his future away from Atletico. “

Barcelona are also said to be interested and are reportedly interested. That, however, is not the same as the previous £100m price tag the Spanish club placed on Alvarez’s head. Instead, it was a player (Ferran Torrest) and a cash gift.

Why Alvarez would be the best replacement for Havertz and Gyokeres

At the end of the day Viktor Gyokeres walked away with the Premier League title to show for his efforts. It is the third consecutive league title for the Swedes who have won twice by jumping with Sporting in Portuguese. It is true that success follows him wherever he goes.

That said, the campaign wasn’t going well enough to raise capital last summer. Far from it, in fact.

Gyokeres endured a barren spell in front of goal, struggled to play the ball throughout and couldn’t keep the ball. He ranks in the worst 92% of strikers in Europe this season with just 0.24 tackles per 90 minutes.

However, in recent months, he has recovered. The striker’s ability to handle the ball has improved a lot and he is using his strength to the best of his abilities.

No one can say he’s not a ruthless finisher either. Only five players in the entire Premier League have a better conversion rate than his 21.2%.

Conversion rate

1) Is Osula

30.4%

2) Noah Okafor

22.9%

3) Danny Welbeck

4) Nick Woltemade

5) Eli Junior Kroupi

22.0%

6) Viktor Gyokeres

21.2%

As for Kai Havertz, it’s the opposite. He wastes a lot in front of goal; just look at that game against Manchester City where it looked like Arsenal had lost the title.

The German scored a goal in that game but also missed a lot of chances, especially when he headed towards the end of the game when it looked easy to score a goal.

That said, unlike Gyokeres, he is very good at holding possessions. He is a false 9 and in recent years, he has worked well. He held Arsenal’s attacking play together well.

In Alvarez, they would find a player who could do it all. Like Gyokeres, he is very good in front of goal. He scored 29 goals in 2024/25 and added another 21 to his tally for Atleti in 2025/26.

In addition, he is a regular helper of goals. At Manchester City he played just behind Erling Haaland, after which he scored 19 times and assisted 13 goals in his final campaign at the Etihad. He also provided nine assists in his most recent season in Madrid. In the words of the producer behind Argentina’s World Cup documentary, Pablo Gonzalez, he is “a monster”.

It’s night and day for Gyokeres who has only registered three assists since his move to Arsenal. Most importantly, like Havertz, Alvarez knows how to put things together beautifully.

He completes 1.23 dribbles per 90 minutes and ranks in the top 9% of strikers in Europe’s top five leagues for perceived threat in build-up phases. Gyokeres ranked in the worst 20% and Havertz ranked in the 50%.

Anticipated Threat (xT) exists a metric that measures how much a player’s action, such as a pass or carry, increases a team’s chances of scoring in a quick sequence of plays.

So, not only will Arsenal be combining their two best strikers, but also a huge improvement for both of them. Like the German, he is able to lead scoring chances and like Gyokeres, he is able to put the ball in the back of the net on a regular basis.
