The former Burnley player has now been tipped to replace Hourihane as Barnsley manager

Former Burnley player and current Notts County boss Martin Paterson has been tipped to replace Conor Hourihane as Barnsley manager this summer.

Hourihane’s record as Barnsley manager

As we approach the end of the campaign, the Tykes have been in terrible form, winning just one of their last ten League One games, a run that leaves them in 13th place, with nothing to play for in the last three games.

Most recently, Hourihane’s side suffered a 1-0 defeat against chasing Stevenage, and the Irishman was critical of his side’s performance.

Although we are sure in which league the Reds will be playing next season, it is not clear who will be there as Hourihane has just reached an agreement to leave in the summer.

The board have begun working to bring in a replacement for the former midfielder, with former Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore seen as the frontrunner, having been there since being sacked at Port Vale in December.

Barnsley have also focused on Notts County manager Paterson, according to Football Insider, who say he has been identified as a ‘candidate’ for the job, due to his good time at Meadow Lane.

Notts County look set to finish in the League Two play-off places at the very least in their first season in the English top flight, although they could be automatically promoted again, as they trail third-placed Cambridge United by just two points, with two games to play.

The former Burnley and Stoke player’s only experience in management was a spell with Burton Albion, which saw the Brewers promoted to League One on the final day of the 2023-24 season.

Paterson could have a major rebuilding job at Barnsley

Should Barnsley sign the 38-year-old, he could have a major rebuilding job on his hands, with Owen Goodman, Tawanda Chirewa, Scott Banks, Nathanael Ogbeta and Tom Bradshaw set to leave at the end of their loan spells.

A host of other players are out of contract, including David McGoldrick, and the 38-year-old could prove to be very difficult to replace, with 15 goals to his name in 35 League One appearances this season.
