Trent Alexander-Arnold is set to return to the Premier League with Arsenal, following an interesting split for the top-flight legend.

The former Liverpool defender, who moved abroad amid a wave of speculation, has recently been linked with a return to England to join the Premier League champions.

According to Manchester United and Tottenham legend Teddy Sheringham, the centre-back could be the missing piece of the Gunners’ puzzle.

Teddy Sheringham tips Trent Alexander-Arnold to do well at Arsenal

Speaking to Boyle Sports (quotes The Sun), Sheringham analyzed how the right-back’s unique creative ability could be utilized in North London, provided he is given the right structural protection.

“Could we see Trent Alexander-Arnold return to the Premier League? Liverpool fans might not want him back so it’s narrowing down where he could go, isn’t it.

“He doesn’t strike me as quickly as an Arsenal player, to be honest. I think they are very strong and resilient and work as a decent back unit. But they can make it work for him.”

Sheringham argued that Alexander-Arnold’s four most criticized defensive mistakes were the result of structural isolation, drawing direct parallels with other top English defenders.

“Even if you have four organized players and good players, if you leave Trent alone he looks everywhere, but that was true with Harry Maguire when Manchester United were not playing well.

If you did that to Tony Adams or Steve Bruce they would look shocked. When you put Trent in a structured, organized back four, and work as a unit, that’s what playing in a team like Arsenal is all about.

“If someone has worked with Trent in this way, trained him to be in the right place at the right time, I’m sure he can improve in that situation to give Arsenal that extra element he brings to the team.

Could Trent join rival Liverpool?

The main obstacle to any potential deal is always the emotional fallout. Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool in controversy, making the legend’s return to Anfield unlikely.

While a move to a direct Premier League rival like Arsenal would firmly cement their position as a giant on Merseyside, history shows it is far from the case.

Modern football fans still remember the great example of Michael Owen, the darling of the Liverpool academy who shocked the nation by finally signing for arch-rivals Manchester United.

The right-back is unlikely to leave Real Madrid this summer despite reports of disagreements with the club.

That said, if he does, a return to the Premier League would undoubtedly be an option with many players looking to sign.
