Lisandro Martinez and Alexis Mac Allister both lashed out at jubilant Argentina players as they lost to Spain in the World Cup final.
The defending champions were beaten 1-0 in New Jersey on Sunday and produced a shocking display of low-level and high-level play before losing their composure at the final whistle with several members of their playing and coaching staff criticizing the Spaniards as they celebrated.
Their defeat was met with relief and jubilation from many neutrals but Manchester United defender Martinez, who was forced off before the break due to injury, says their detractors should give Argentina more credit.
Writing on Instagram, he said: “It’s sad not to bring home the trophy we all wanted, but I’m full of pride – proud of this jersey, my teammates, the coaching staff, the managers, the medical team, the chefs, the benefactors and everyone involved in making this trip go as smoothly as possible. And, above all, with your love, and sharing with us that love, your love and humility. It defines us very well, and the unity of the country – the unity I hope for that it will last forever.
“I want to congratulate Spain for the title they deserve.
“To our people, I want to say that the result does not define the journey we have taken. We have overcome difficulties, we have made the impossible possible, and we have never looked for excuses – we have found reasons to continue. We have protected our colors beyond the field and shared unforgettable moments with the national team, and with our families and the unconditional support of all Argentines for their amazing representation.
“Remember: ‘The fall of the great is the joy of the mediocre.’ I love you, Argentina!”
Mac Allister thanks critics for giving Argentina inspiration
That disdain was echoed by Liverpool midfielder Mac Allister, who played the full 120 minutes at the MetLife Stadium and produced a tough performance following Enzo Fernández’s dismissal.
Mac Allister said: “We were very close… that’s why it hurts so much, but no one can take away everything we experienced in this World Cup.”
“We had to suffer, there were obstacles, but we overcame them TOGETHER.
“Let us cry, because we are Argentines and we always want to win. But after crying, let us get up, unite, and continue, because this is not over. And in the last few days, my mother reminded me of a famous saying: ‘If there is a repeat, do not be afraid.’
“Thank you to all the people of Argentina for all the messages of love and support. You don’t know how important you are in this journey. We also thank those from other countries who send us messages mocking or enjoying our pain.
