Spurs have a “Kane regen” that could end Solanke’s Tottenham career forever

Last summer, the appointment of Thomas Frank was warmly received by those of the Tottenham Hotspur persuasion. It would be a shift away from the mysterious path of Ange Postecoglou, leaning towards a more efficient and stable football.

But to act boldly, and Frank was not a fan of that method, he was fired after eight months of hard work. Sadly, the ENIC Group did not deal well with the sacking of the former Brentford manager, while Spurs focus on the situation at risk of sacking under Igor Tudor.

Now, Roberto De Zerbi is leading the way, but 18th-placed Tottenham are still two points behind West Ham United above them, and they need to capture and shine in the final third if they are to turn this ship around.

Sadly, it doesn’t look like a solution will come in the form of Dominic Solanke.

Why De Zerbi should abandon Solanke

Solanke was forced off after 40 minutes at Molineux, with a hamstring injury that has yet to show the extent of his expected layoff. It is not thought to be bad, but with only one month of the campaign left, the 28-year-old faces a struggle to return before the end of the battle for Tottenham.

In any case, Richarlison is probably the preferred option at number nine. No Spurs star has outscored the Brazilian in the Premier League this season, and his resilience could come as the battle for survival intensifies.

As far as Solanke goes, it’s hard to argue that he hasn’t been a flop in north London. Tottenham have signed the former Bournemouth striker for £55m starting in 2024. That figure could rise to £65m, but Solanke hasn’t done enough to check all the boxes.

Over time, he needs to be replaced, and while ENIC will be inclined to dip into their pockets this summer, if Spurs survive, they actually have a talented goalscorer on loan who has been dubbed the next Harry Kane.

De Zerbi must introduce the new Harry Kane of Spurs

Hard to ask, hopefully Tottenham get a new Kane. The England captain is a classy player, he will surely go down in history as one of the best players in the business.

Solanke may have fallen by the wayside with a long way to go to take his place, but a youngster like Will Lankshear could emerge as a smart option to step in and re-emerge in the final third.

Actually described as “Harry Kane regen” by one scout, Lankshear is brilliant with his link-up play and his time in the danger zone.

The young forward is not lacking in physicality, and is likely to be able to cope with the pressures of Premier League football, intense pace and smart and strong defenders.

If Tottenham are relegated, Lankshear is expected to be included in the first team, but perhaps they should consider welcoming some on-loan talent back up front anyway. He has the potential to play a role in the Premier League.

This season, when Lankshear, 21, faced an Oxford United side relegated to League One after two years in the second tier, he impressed with his clinical presence and physical presence in attacking areas.

Kane spent a few seasons on loan in lower league settings before turning up at Tottenham towards the end of the 2013/14 season.

There are similarities between the two, for sure, and while it would be wise to invest in a new top striker this summer, Lankshear may have the right skills to impress under De Zerbi in the Premier League.

Will Lankshear match Kane’s success at Tottenham and in the Premier League? Maybe not, but the incoming striker could be an interesting solution in the number nine position next season, one whose emergence has seen Solanke looking for a new club.
