Mike Moore 2.0 could be on his way to Ibrox

Oh Danny Rohl, you’ve been doing such a great job at the Rangers. You could repair the wreckage left by a poor first half of the campaign and put the Ibrox side back in contention for the Premiership title.

Until Motherwell’s visit to Glasgow on Sunday afternoon, the Gers had not lost a single league game in 2026. They were within touching distance of winning the league and were ahead of their Old Firm rivals.

Alas, while the Rangers are not well and truly out of things at the moment, it sounds like this will be another season where there will be no green side of town.

They are now four points behind and are simply running out of time to turn things around. Even Mike Moore couldn’t save them over the weekend. Introduced as part of the second half, it was perhaps surprising to see him omitted from the starting XI.

The latest on Mikey Moore’s future at Rangers

Many have thrived under Rohl’s leadership, but Moore has arguably been one of the Rangers’ most exciting players of late, certainly in 2026.

Prior to this loss to Motherwell, the Spurs loanee had started all eight of the last eight Premiership games. During that time, he had scored three goals and registered one assist.

Sure, those aren’t jaw-dropping numbers but he’s only 18 and finding his feet in the senior game. In total, this season he has found the net six times. An effective total, especially when you consider he started five games under Russell Martin’s poor spell.

However, the chances of him signing permanently in the summer still feel slim, although his fans would love to see him return. It may come down to where Tottenham find themselves in the next round.

Throw in relegation and you’d think Moore would be a valuable addition to English football’s second tier. Keep waiting and first team opportunities may not come. Another loan at Rangers would be good but a permanent move seems a long way off.

Football FanCast sources understand that preliminary talks have been held about returning to Ibrox in the summer but the player himself does not want to leave Spurs. Speaking recently, the 18-year-old said: “I want to go back to Tottenham and hopefully find a place for myself in the team.”

Therefore, the Gers will need to be replaced.

Rangers could sign new Mikey Moore for £5m

How much Rangers can spend and who they can sign will likely be determined by whether they defend the Champions League next season.

However, a move could appeal to Hull City’s Joe Gelhardt.

As reported earlier this month by Football Insider, Gelhardt is understood to be ‘willing’ to move to Rangers with the Glasgow side one of the ‘frontrunners’ to secure a move.

There is said to be an agreement for £3m-£5m which would be money well spent. After all, this is one of the best players in the second division of English football and he has a style of play similar to Moore’s.

Hailed as a “wrecking ball” by the great Marcelo Bielsa at Leeds, Gelhardt coincidentally made first-team breakthroughs at the same age.

While Spurs’ Moore bowed out at the age of 16, Gelhardt appeared at Wigan at the age of 16. Although it hasn’t happened for Hull’s top scorer yet, he has finally come of age.

Now 23 years old, he has scored 14 goals in 38 Championship games, marking his best return by a country mile in senior football to date.

Interestingly, these two players have similar structure and playing style as well. There is something hectic about the way they play and run.

While Gelhardt stands at 5 foot 9, Moore is just a fraction taller at 5 foot 11, meaning they are not very strong. However, both players are direct, aggressive with their runs and have excellent close control, maneuvering the ball between defenders with skill.

This season, they have made almost the same number of dribbles per game. Moore has completed 1.5 and Gelhardt has completed 1.3.

Both heralded as prodigies at the same age, the Rangers loanee will hope he can reach the top sooner than his club’s transfer target, but even so, Gelhardt could be a very good player if they can bring Moore back.
