San Jose Sharks Sign Tye Felhaber to Bolster Forward Depth – Hockey Writers – San Jose Sharks

Much of the San Jose Sharks’ offseason attention has understandably focused on breaking news, such as Darnell Nurse coming in a trade, Mason Marchment signing a five-year contract, and Jacob Trouba joining the blue line. Beneath those strange additions, however, general manager Mike Grier has been quietly introducing the organizational depth that any contending program needs. A recent example is Tye Felhaber.
The Sharks announced on Wednesday that they have signed the 27-year-old player to a one-year, two-year contract. It’s the kind of work that doesn’t often generate headlines, but it serves a clear purpose. Felhaber gives San Jose an experienced goalie in the American Hockey League (AHL) while adding insurance to the organization at the forward position as the Sharks continue to build their roster.
The decision came after the Oilers’ back-to-back signings of the veteran defenseman and signing Trouba to a four-year contract. With their weak link finally solved, they now need a deep forward depth.
Felhaber provides that as he is coming off a strong season with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL, where he finished fifth on the team with 15 goals and seventh with 31 points in 63 games. That production followed the best season of his career in 2024-25, when he posted an AHL-high 22 goals, 22 assists, and 44 points and 108 penalty minutes in 67 contests.
A proven AHL goal scorer for the Barracuda
The value of signing like this is straightforward. The San Jose Barracuda, the Sharks’ AHL affiliate, is home to a growing collection of young players in need of development and reliable veterans. Players like Quentin Musty, Kasper Halttunen, and Igor Chernyshov are still finding their professional feet, and a steady presence helps that continue.
Felhaber fits that role perfectly. Throughout his career, he has appeared in 294 AHL games between the Colorado, Milwaukee Admirals, Syracuse Crunch, Texas Stars, and Laval Rocket, totaling 129 points (62 goals and 67 assists.) That is a reasonable body of work at the level, and gives the Barracuda a forward who can contribute to the offensive habits of his teammates while modeling the team.
He also brings NHL experience, albeit short. Felhaber skated in five games with the Colorado Avalanche in 2024-25, making his debut on December 16, 2024 in Vancouver. While he profiles primarily as an AHL contributor, the two-way structure of his deal means he can be recalled if injuries strike San Jose’s top team during the season.
The Junior Pedigree is still worth noting
There was a time when Felhaber was one of the top scorers in junior hockey. In his final season in the Ontario Hockey League with the Ottawa 67’s, he finished second in the league with 59 goals, third with 109 points, and tied for the entire circuit with a plus-56 average, earning a spot on the 2018-19 OHL Second All-Star Team.
Those goaltending touches haven’t fully translated to the professional levels, which is common for junior goalies, but it speaks to a finishing ability that could be useful at the AHL level. He served as co-captain in his final two seasons in Ottawa, a nod to the leadership qualities that make him a perfect fit for the Barracuda’s developing room. Originally signed by the Dallas Stars as a free agent in March 2019, he has built a steady professional career since then.
What does Pipeline mean?
Signs like this don’t move the needle by themselves, but they’re important in conjunction. With the Sharks heading toward contention, the organization needs its AHL roster filled with a mix of prospects and veterans who can win games and develop talent at the same time. A competitive and well-rounded Barracuda squad accelerates the development of players San Jose is counting on for the future.
Felhaber represents that kind of episode. He’s unlikely to figure prominently in the Sharks’ NHL plans, and his deal reflects that fact. But he deepens the forward group, provides recall insurance, and adds a proven scorer and veteran voice to the Barracuda team that fills the organization’s next wave. For a business that spent the summer making noise at the top of its list, it’s a quiet but sensible piece of housekeeping that keeps the pipeline healthy.
