Report, result and goals as the uninspired Gunners progress to the semi-finals of the Champions League

Arsenal secured their place in the semi-finals of the Champions League after a 0-0 draw with Sporting at the Emirates, taking a 1-0 lead on aggregate.

It was far from a convincing display from Mikel Arteta’s side, but their first-leg advantage proved enough to see them over the line.

While Sporting showed flashes of promise, they ultimately lacked the edge needed to force extra time in North London.

Cagey’s first half has few clear chances

The opening stanzas set the tone for what will be an emotional evening. Arsenal controlled the ball early on, moving the ball around patiently but struggling to penetrate Sporting’s well-organised defence.

Eberechi Eze and Viktor Gyokeres both shot from the edge of the box without testing the keeper early on.

Sports, on the other hand, gradually grew into a competition and began to look more threatening at halftime. Francisco Trincao and Pedro Goncalves both had small chances, but couldn’t do anything.

The best chance of the first half fell to Geny Catamo, who met a high cross behind the post and had a first-time shot at the post, only to see his effort cross the upright and bounce wide.

It was a warning sign for Arsenal, who looked uneasy as the break approached.

The second half followed a similar pattern, with Arsenal seeing plenty of possession but failing to translate the ball into clear chances.

Gabriel Martinelli provided occasional bursts of energy down the left, while Eze continued to probe through the middle.

Sporting, on the other hand, enjoyed their best spell of sustained pressure in midfield. Their midfield began to dictate the tempo, and falling into the box caused a momentary concern, however they struggled to produce quality chances.

A notable opportunity came when Maxi Araújo drove a powerful shot wide after a counter attack.

As the clock ticked down, tensions around the Emirates grew. Arsenal have been more focused on controlling possession and reducing the tempo, prioritizing game management over chasing the second goal in the tie.

They almost put the result beyond doubt late on when Leandro Trossard rose high at the back post to meet a corner, only to see his header rebound off the bar.

Sporting continued to push in the closing minutes but lacked the urgency and quality needed to really trouble Arsenal’s defence.

Their last chance came in stoppage time, when substitute Joao Simoes struck a low effort from the edge of the box that curled slightly into the side netting.

The work is done, but the biggest tests are yet to come

In the end, Arsenal did enough. It wasn’t a performance that will live long in the memory, but it showed the kind of control often required in winning football.

Arteta’s side are now into the semi-finals for the second season in a row, but a significant step up in performance will be required if they are to progress.
