Newcastle are making calls to sign the “perfect” £39m star
Newcastle United’s season has been very disappointing, but it has not been a disaster, and if Eddie Howe pushes his club’s summer transfer strategy, this could be a major turning point for the club.
After all, Newcastle proved the doubters wrong any number of times before, and it wasn’t long before Tyneside sang songs after lifting the Carabao Cup, soon after celebrating Champions League qualification for the second time in three years.
There is still uncertainty on the board, with Ross Wilson about to manage his first transfer window as sporting director at St. James’ Park. Uncertainty, of course, but the Magpies were without a man in that position last year, commenting on the club’s strategic failure.
We have a lot to fix. Anthony Gordon has completed a £69m move to Barcelona, while Sandro Tonali is also at the center of speculation over his future at the club.
Newcastle’s summer transfer strategy
As things stand, signing a top player is Newcastle’s priority. Gordon finished the campaign as the club’s top scorer in all competitions, while Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa both face uncertain futures at the club after leaving much to be desired.

Tonali is attracting interest from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United, but Tino Livramento is also on the radar of several big hitters, and after Kieran Trippier left the club at the end of his contract, full-back is a position that Howe and co cannot afford to ignore.
Yes, according to the Daily Mail, Newcastle have made Atalanta defender Marco Palestra one of their top targets ahead of the transfer window, with talks continuing for the Italian star.
Arsenal and Manchester City have also made inquiries about the 21-year-old in recent weeks, and although he is valued at £39m, this could be a smart move for PIF, especially if Livramento is sold for a huge fee.
Why the Palestra could be Newcastle’s new Tonali
A few years ago, Newcastle signed a talented Italian international named Tonali. He joined the club from AC Milan in a £55m deal.
Tonali has shown the peaks and valleys that Newcastle have gone through over the past few years, but there is no question that he is a classy midfielder, very good and in control of his technical skills. His agent, Beppe Riso, described him as “one of the best midfielders in the world”.
Now, Newcastle could repeat the trick by signing Palestra, a player who, like Tonali, has attracted interest from some of England’s elite, with Toon re-emerging as favorites to secure his services.
Hailed as the “perfect” defender by scouting talent Jacek Kulig, the details are kind to the youngster after his recent Serie A loan spell with Cagliari. A powerful and mobile wide defender, Palestra created seven big chances throughout the campaign, completing 85% of his passes and winning 6.7 duels per game, coming in at a 60% success rate.
All of this means he has everything he needs to thrive under Howe’s wing, possibly building on the work Livramento has done. The best skill is to be found, and Livramento has missed a lot of things due to injury.
He also fell just shy of completing two dribbles per game, embodying the perfection Kulig dreams of. Tonali and Palestra may not share much standing value, but both offer plenty of performance worthy of Premier League football.
Whether Newcastle launch a concerted move remains to be seen, but talks are ongoing, and Palestra could emulate Tonali in frustrating several of Newcastle’s rivals down the stretch, upset that they didn’t act before he moved to Tyneside and developed into one of the Premier League’s best players.

Better than Gordon: Newcastle see £51m bid accepted to sign elite winger
