Newcastle are entering the race to sign Josh Acheampong with Chelsea open for sale
Newcastle United are now in the race to sign the “unbelievable” player, with Chelsea keen on allowing a summer transfer.
Newcastle’s summer transfer plans are under construction
Eddie Howe raised the bar at St. James’ Park, for guiding his Newcastle team to two Champions League spots, and lifting the 2025 EFL Cup.
However, the 2025-26 campaign was very reminiscent of the pre-PIF era, when the Magpies stumbled to 12th place in the Premier League, after collecting just 49 points.
The manager suggested that the positive margins be changed during the season, saying: “We were seconds away from beating Barcelona at home, which would have been an unbelievable game. It feels like that season for us.
“There wasn’t a moment where the season was very different. Unfortunately, those things didn’t happen for us and the outlook is very different from what it could have been.”
However, after a difficult campaign, it is not surprising that Howe wants to reshape his squad this summer, and bringing in a new winger will be on the agenda, following Anthony Gordon’s move to FC Barcelona.
Kieran Trippier is another early departure, with the right-back signing a two-year deal at Wolverhampton Wanderers, from St.
Chelsea are willing to sell the “amazing” star with Newcastle keen
According to a report from Sports Boom, Newcastle are now in the race to sign Chelsea star Josh Acheampong, with their Premier League rivals ready to offload the versatile defender for around £25m this summer.
Brentford, Arsenal, Crystal Palace and AFC Bournemouth are likely to be in the running for Acheampong, who can play at right-back and centre-back, with the Bees keen to make a deal.
The Magpies’ interest makes a lot of sense though, as Trippier’s departure leaves a gap in the squad, and Howe’s defense was rewarding at times last season, posting 55 Premier League goals, more than the likes of Leeds United and Nottingham Forest.
The 20-year-old has been in and out of the Chelsea squad during the 2025-2026 campaign, but featured in the 2-1 win against Liverpool in October, and “dominated Isak”, according to journalist Nizaar Kinsella.
Kinsella also hailed the Chelsea man as “amazing”, and comfortable on the ball, as shown by the fact that he averages 92.1% of passes in the Premier League.
Fabian Schar recently penned a new one-year deal to extend his stay at St. James’ Park, but with the 34-year-old Swiss defender, it may be time to start thinking about the future, and Acheampong could be an exciting long-term player.
