Jan Paul van Hecke’s stance on joining Tottenham after Brighton rejected bid

Tottenham’s summer rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi continues apace, with several key deals and negotiations taking place at the same time as the club look to avoid a repeat of last season’s struggles.

One of the headlines this week has been Spurs’ renewed pursuit of Man City winger Savinho.

Many reports in the past few days have revealed that Tottenham are pushing to reach an agreement with the Brazilian player, who has long been favored by De Zerbi.

Football Insider reported earlier this week that Savinho is excited at the prospect of working under the Italian and would welcome a move to north London if the clubs can reach an agreement.

Savinho is not the only player on Tottenham’s radar.

They consider him more than Savinho.

Paul O’Keefe recently reported that Fulham winger Harry Wilson and Union Saint-Gilloise striker Anan Khalaili are also being considered as Spurs explore their options in the wide areas.

Meanwhile, strengthening the defense remains a priority despite the expected arrivals of Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi.

That focus on the back line has now brought Brighton full-back Jan Paul van Hecke firmly into the limelight.

According to reports that emerged this morning from David Ornstein of The Athletic, later echoed by The Telegraph and others, Tottenham have already seen a bid for Van Hecke rejected by Brighton.

The Seagulls are understood to value the Netherlands international more than Spurs’ initial offer, but talks are still ongoing.

Now, Dutch journalist Joost Blaauwhof has provided another update that will inspire Tottenham fans.

Tottenham reach agreement with van Hecke on pre-World Cup deal

According to Voetbal International, van Hecke ‘appears to be reaching an agreement with Spurs’ on his side, with the former Blackburn loanee looking to join De Zerbi in London while club-club talks are ongoing.

Blaauwhof also says to X that it is possible the transfer “could be completed before the World Cup” – highlighting the pace at which negotiations are progressing.

That would represent a huge improvement for De Zerbi.

The Tottenham boss knows van Hecke well from their time together at Brighton.

The Dutch defender has developed into a regular starter under De Zerbi and the pair appear to have maintained a strong technical relationship since the Italian left the south coast.

The travel time is remarkable.

Van Hecke

Van Hecke has entered the final year of his Brighton contract and, despite talks over an extension, has yet to commit to new terms. This situation has attracted interest from other places, with Liverpool, Chelsea and Man City also being praised for their praise of the 25-year-old.

Brighton remain in strong negotiating position, however.

Recent reports have suggested the club want around £70 million for the defender, reflecting his importance to the club and the inflation in the market for top-class defenders.

Tottenham’s initial proposal fell short of this standard, but genuine negotiations continue to show that neither side has left the table.

For Spurs, the attraction is obvious.

Van Hecke is entering his prime, has Premier League experience, international pedigree with the Netherlands and already understands De Zerbi’s demands.

He would be able to make an impact quickly rather than needing a long period of adaptation.

With negotiations for Savinho continuing and several other targets being monitored, Tottenham will have a busy few weeks.

But of all the names currently being discussed, van Hecke may be the closest to being De Zerbi’s next signing.

If Blaauwhof’s information proves to be accurate and personal goals are coming to an end, attention will now turn to whether Tottenham can close the gap with Brighton and finally get a deal over the line.
