New ride to six-shot win at Cadillac – Golf News

Cameron Young scored a dominant victory at the Cadillac Championship on Sunday, winning his second PGA Tour title of the season by six shots at Trump National Doral Miami.

Young began his final round six shots clear of a chasing pack that included Scottie Scheffler, but the 28-year-old New Yorker extended his lead to 18 under through nine holes, birdies on the third, fifth and eighth holes.

While Scheffler struggled to drive it with his putter for much of the first half, the World No.1 rode Young late, birdying three of his last four holes, to end his week at 13-under par and finish second for the third time in as many weeks.

Despite Scheffler’s best efforts to grab the lead, Young was nowhere to be found, wrapping up his back nine with two bogeys and three birdies to win the third PGA Tour title of his career in 19-under-par.

“I think self-belief continues to build,” Young said. “I’ve put myself in a lot of good spots over the last four, five years. Lately, I’ve started to come out on the better side of it. So, I’m excited for the next few weeks and moving on to Charlotte and the PGA Championship.”

PUNISHMENT

On the par-4 second hole, Young was awarded a penalty after his golf ball landed in its original position after he stopped his club in contact with the shot. Young immediately called the rules legal and the tool’s responsibility wrong. He bounced back brilliantly, finding the heart of the green with his third shot, before chipping in from 25 feet to save par.

“It’s just one of those, your heart sinks when you see it move, but it moved, and that’s part of what golf is all about,” Young said. “There was no one to give me a penalty but me, and I think I had four of those on the PGA Tour now, so I need to start putting the club a little bit more. It’s just unfortunate, but I held it really well.”

With Scheffler finishing alone in second place, US Ryder Cup player Ben Griffin took third at 12-under 68, while 46-year-old Adam Scott moved up 21 places on Sunday’s leaderboard after posting an eight-under 64 to tie for fourth.

After securing his first PGA Tour card last week with a victory alongside brother Matt at the Zurich Classic, Alex Fitzpatrick continued his impressive form, with the Englishman finishing tied for ninth at the close.

Justin Rose, making his debut with his new McLaren irons in the bag, endured a tough week, with the world no.5 finishing tied for 65th in the field of 72 players at two over, despite closing with a 68.
