Liverpool eyeing ‘cheat code’ £80m signing move for Sadio Mane again

Liverpool don’t have much to play for as the 2025/26 campaign draws to a close. Apart from the FA Cup and the Champions League, the Reds are focused on riding the train in the European competition.
This has been a difficult year for Arne Slot and his team, who have aged compared to last year’s Premier League winning rate. However, Chelsea and co are also poor, so Liverpool sit comfortably in fourth place, eight points ahead of sixth-placed Brighton & Hove Albion.

Victory at Crystal Palace last weekend cemented Liverpool’s place in the top four, while goals from Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz will have delighted FSG after a combined £240m move for the attackers last summer.
However, Liverpool need to invest again, and while further additions are needed, the midfielder has left a lot to be desired this term, and is in need of renewal.
Liverpool are eyeing a Premier League midfielder
Less than three years ago, Jurgen Klopp and Jorg Schmadtke reunited Liverpool. Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch and Wataru Endo have arrived.
Szoboszlai has been Liverpool’s best player this season, but he has been a diamond in the rough this season, and others have been deceptive.
In particular, Mac Allister had been ridiculous so far below his normal standards. His future is uncertain, as is that of young Liverpool fan Curtis Jones, who is increasing the need for new recruits in the engine room.
Well, according to Anfield Watch, Liverpool officials have been hard at work putting together a shortlist for the summer, and as they whittle down the list, Adam Wharton has emerged as a leading contender as they weigh the options.
The 22-year-old Englishman has been the exception for Crystal Palace, who won the FA Cup last season and could lift the Conference League in a month’s time.
He would like to progress his career and move to a club like Liverpool, but Palace won’t let him leave for less, valuing the maestro at £80m.
It has emerged that scouts have been monitoring his game since breaking out at Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.
Why Adam Wharton would be perfect for Liverpool
Liverpool often hit the jackpot when they sign talented players from Premier League rivals. If the Reds were to be successful in their bid for Wharton this summer, it would be a deal that would see them sign Sadio Mane from Southampton.
That may sound strange, but Mane established himself as one of the most talented players in the Premier League before moving to Klopp’s Liverpool in a £34m deal. Manchester United were also interested, but Anfield was the place for the Senegal legend.
Liverpool can repeat that by signing Wharton, who is on the Red Devils’ radar again, to bring one of the Premier League’s brightest talents to the biggest stage of all.
He is ready to step up, as he showed at Anfield last weekend that he can get past slot midfielders. Some may have reservations about Wharton’s lack of physicality, but he won duels and continued to play forward. Signing him would give Wirtz and Isak some offensive potential.

Sometimes, such a sign is all you need. That was certainly the case for Mane, who came before Mohamed Salah and scored 120 goals in Liverpool’s richest period in modern history, not just footwork but devastating attack and rare brilliance.
Wharton may not be a striker, but he shares a quick mindset when he’s on the ball and under pressure. Indeed, he has been hailed as a “cheat code” by commentator Ben Mattinson.
Could he be worth the £80m release? Wharton may not be the finished article, but he will bring something different to the Liverpool midfielder, and, moreover, he has the right ‘Slotball’ style, perhaps the key to returning Liverpool to the top of the Premier League and beyond the continent.
