Striker Sardar Azmoun – the country’s third-highest scorer in history, with 57 goals in 91 games – was left out of the squad after reports that he had offended the Iranian government by posting a picture of himself with UAE ruler Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Instagram in March.
