FanGraphs Feature Focus: RosterResource Coaches Table

The first feature I created as a FanGraphs developer, which I added to my existing RosterResource project at the beginning of last season, was the Coaches Table, found in the Breakdowns section of RosterResource. Since I didn’t do nearly a good enough job of announcing its existence, I’ll atone by making it today’s Feature Focus.
Aside from the uniformed coaches employed by each team these days (manager, bench coach, usually several hitting and pitching coaches, and base coaches), there are a few more columns on the team coaches’ table at large. The first is the “FC/QC/Catching” column. Most teams have a field coordinator (FC), quality control coach (QC), and/or assistant coach, although not all teams do, as some clubs choose to distribute those responsibilities to existing coaches. The “Other Coaches” column includes every coach in uniform who does not have a title that fits neatly into one of the columns. These are often coaches with a standard title such as “Major League Coach,” but not only that. Miguel Cairo of the Orioles, for example, serves as a dedicated infielder, a role typically taken by one of the top coaches in addition to his starting or third base duties.
The most attention-grabbing feature of the table may be the style that you will see in many names. As noted in the legend at the bottom of the grid, underlined players have major league playing experience, while those in bold have major league managerial experience, including serving as an interim manager. All coaches’ names with playing experience, including minors, link to their FanGraphs player page.
Since we have data going back to when I first created the coaches database at the beginning of last season, earlier this year I added Season and Half Season selectors to the top of the grid, automatically creating the current coaching staff:

The current season will have Current and Start options, if you wanted to go back to the beginning of the year and see, for example, the Red Sox coaching staff before every shot:

When converting to previous seasons (currently 2025), the Start option will remain but Current will be End, indicating the coaching staff at the end of the season before off-season slots are created or filled. Here’s a look at the end of 2025, including the Orioles’ staff under interim manager Tony Mansolino:

The last thing to note here is that all of these ideas are point in time and not retroactive, which means that a 2025 coach who becomes the first manager in 2026 (for example, Craig Albernaz) will not have his 2025 cells strong.
Like most FanGraphs features, the Coaches Grid is free for all to view but the Excel export is for members only. To become a Member, you can register here.
