Chelsea are considering a shock move for an “incredible” Premier League manager to replace Iraola

Chelsea are eyeing Fulham’s Marco Silva as their new manager, having sacked Liam Rosenior following the 3-0 defeat by Brighton.

Rosenior was fired by Chelsea after less than four months in charge

The Blues’ form has dipped since mid-March, losing their last five Premier League games in a row, and a heavy defeat at the American Express Stadium was the final straw for the owners, with Rosenior out of a job on Wednesday.

Gary Neville has taken aim at BlueCo’s policy of signing new players and giving players and managers longer deals, saying: “The owners made a big mistake. I said at that time, they have a group of talented players, young sports directors in terms of experience regarding Europe, you have little ownership in terms of being only two or three years old. You need some experience somewhere in the team.

“These six-year, eight-year contracts are almost laughable from the start. Even if I’m a manager or a player. The owners have no idea what they’re doing.”

Rosenior’s CV before his move to Stamford Bridge was not impressive, having spent time at Derby County, Hull City and Strasbourg, and perhaps it is time for the owners to make a statement by bringing in a more experienced manager.

Andoni Iraola would fit the bill, having proven himself in the Premier League over the past three years with AFC Bournemouth, and there have been links with him about a move to west London.

The Spaniard has Bournemouth pushing for Europe, with his side moving ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League table after a 2-2 draw with Leeds United on Wednesday night.

Andoni Iraola

Iraola is not the only Premier League manager on the shortlist, with the BBC reporting that Fulham boss Silva is being considered, with his contract at Craven Cottage set to expire at the end of the season.

Like Iraola, the 48-year-old has built up a wealth of Premier League experience, and is the third longest-serving manager in the top flight, having worked with the Cottagers since July 2021.

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has hailed the former Everton boss, who likes to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, as “unbelievable”, and has lifted four trophies during his managerial career, but it would be a shock to see him move to the West London rivals.

That said, while Silva has extensive experience in the Premier League, he hasn’t proven himself at the highest level, having made just 26 European appearances, which would make him a questionable selection.
