Arsenal have been sued by former kit manager Mark Bonnick over allegations of wrongful dismissal

Arsenal have been sued by former kit manager Mark Bonnick for unfair dismissal.
According to The Guardian, Bonnick, a lifelong fan who worked for the North London outfit for more than two decades, has launched an Employment Tribunal claim for unfair dismissal and discrimination, claiming the club is bowing to outside pressure instead of properly investigating his case.

Mark Bonnick has sued Arsenal for unfair dismissal
The legal battle represents the biggest conflict between Arsenal and a dedicated, long-serving employee.
Bonnick has spent 22 years working within the club’s academy, ensuring behind-the-scenes performance standards are met every day.
However, his tenure came to an abrupt and controversial end when he was given notice of his dismissal.
Backed by the European Legal Support Center (ELSC), Bonnick has filed a full legal claim against the Gunners.
His legal representatives say the club failed in its duty of care to protect the veteran from online targeting, opting to force the withdrawal which they say amounts to political scrutiny and discrimination based on his beliefs.
What really happened?
The controversy stems back to a series of social media posts Bonnick made on X, where he expressed strong political views, criticism of Israel, and solidarity with Palestine.
Following a furious online backlash and an allegedly coordinated campaign from pro-Israel social media accounts, Arsenal’s leadership stepped in, initially suspending the veteran kitman before officially sacking him.
Sadly, internal documents later obtained through access to data requests revealed that the FA had clearly reviewed Bonnick’s social media activities before his termination and sent an official email to Arsenal stating that his posts had not breached any of the governing body’s rules.
Furthermore, during his internal appeal, Arsenal’s disciplinary board admitted that they did not find his statements to be against the law.
Despite this admission, the club chose to uphold the dismissal, justifying the decision on the grounds that the spread of the news had brought Arsenal into “disgrace.”
For Bonnick, who was fired shortly before his retirement, the situation represents a double standard, and his ongoing legal challenge aims to obtain a public apology, financial damages, and a review of how football clubs handle workers’ political speech.
Arsenal have also been accused of sacking Mesut Ozil for his political views
For many critics and football fans, Bonnick’s legal battle highlights a familiar pattern at the Emirates Stadium.
The case drew immediate, uncomfortable comparisons with Arsenal’s treatment of former star player Mesut Ozil, whose Gunners career was quickly ruined after expressing political views online.
Back in December 2019, Özil used social media to criticize China’s persecution of Uighur Muslims in the Xinjiang region.
Fearing a serious financial and commercial backlash in the lucrative Chinese market, where state broadcaster CCTV even pulled an Arsenal game in retaliation, the north London club acted quickly.
Arsenal released a widely circulated statement on Chinese social media site Weibo, distancing themselves from their player and saying the club “always adheres to the policy of not getting involved in politics.”
After this incident, the World Cup winner went from being an important part of the team to being shut out, he was left out of both Premier League and Europa League teams before his contract was terminated.
Speaking at the Leadership in an Age of Confusion conference last month, Ozil opened up about how he was sacked by his former club.
He said:
“I heard about the Uighur Turks and I did my research. Then, like a star, I had a voice. And I also knew that if I posted something like this, I would get into trouble. But I didn’t pay attention. I posted and I was happy.
“So, they closed [on] I the doors. They didn’t let me play anymore. I understand my teammates. So, when they contact me, they will be in trouble.
“They have to take care of their family, so this was my decision to react to what I did. Yes, I had hard times because you know I enjoyed playing football. They just took it away from me.”

Critics argue that both Özil’s pursuit and Bonnick’s ongoing case reflect the club’s history of prioritizing commercial security and public relations over protecting the free speech of its employees.
