3 years after leaving Rangers for £0, Ibrox rejection is better than Chermiti

Glasgow Rangers striker Youssef Chermiti finally ended his long wait to score against a side outside the top three in the Scottish Premiership last weekend.

The Portugal U21 scored twice in a 6-3 win at Falkirk in the club’s last game, the first time he has scored against a side other than Celtic or Hearts in 2026.

He had scored just one goal against other teams in the league all season before that against Falkirk, and has now made it 11 this campaign.

Since signing from Everton for £8m last summer, Chermiti has scored 11 goals and provided three assists in 25 Premiership appearances for the Light Blues.

However, the Portuguese forward also failed to score a single goal or provide an assist in his eight appearances in the Europa League.

What Youssef Chermiti still needs to improve on at Rangers

Chermiti deserves credit for his recent form, with his hat-trick against Hearts and braces against Celtic and Falkirk, but he still has a long way to go to live up to his price at Danny Rohl’s Ibrox.

The former Everton player still needs to add consistency to his goal scoring as he has scored just six points in 36 appearances in all competitions for the Light Blues.

Failing to score in 30 of the 36 games he played for the club is not an impressive number for a player who has been signed for the most money that has been paid to a star since 2000.

His form in the Europa League, in particular, has been disappointing and Chermiti needs to find a way to add consistency to his finishing and every game in the box ahead of next season.

If he can do that, the £8m centre-forward could be the permanent number nine the Gers have been looking for since the departure of Alfredo Morelos.

Rangers have already produced a bigger talent than Youssef Chermiti

Although Chermiti is still struggling to prove himself at Ibrox, there is a former Rangers striker who is now looking more capable.

Robbie Ure came through the youth ranks at Ibrox and looked destined to be the next Kris Boyd, who scored 135 goals in 234 games as Scotland’s top scorer for the Gers.

The Scotsman scored 22 goals in 48 appearances for the club at youth level before scoring his first goal on his debut against Queen of the South in the League Cup in August 2022.

Unfortunately, however, Ure chose to move on at the end of his contract in the summer of 2023, forcing Rangers to release him, and he joined Anderlecht before signing for Swedish club Sirius in March 2025.

Since moving to Sweden, the 22-year-old striker has shown that he can score goals regularly as a clinical finisher at the highest level in the Allsvenskan.

The young striker, who is eligible to play for Scotland or Ukraine at international level, has scored 13 goals and created five assists in 33 league games since the start of last season for Sirius.

On top of that, Ure scored five goals in five Swedish Cup games earlier this year, only for his side to lose in the semi-finals on penalties to Hammarby.

The 22-year-old has now scored 18 goals and provided six assists in 38 appearances for Sirius in all competitions, working at an average of 1.58 goals per game.

Chermiti, on the other hand, has averaged 2.58 goals per game for Rangers with 11 goals and three assists in his 36 outings for the club so far, showing that Ure has had a huge impact on his side.

These figures suggest that Rangers have landed a bigger talent than Chermiti in 2023, as he has produced goals and assists consistently at a career-high level, at a respectable level in Sweden, since leaving Ibrox.

Ure could have continued with Boyd 2.0 at Ibrox with his unique return goal to Sirius because he could have been the team’s best player up front as a Scottish striker, something the Gers haven’t had for a long time, with the likes of Morelos, Cyril Dessers, and now Chermiti leading the way.

James-Tavernier-Rangers-Celtic

Rangers backed a cheap “amazing” signing in exchange for one of their highest paid players

Rangers could say goodbye to James Tavernier this summer.

It’s a shame the Light Blues couldn’t keep this amazing youngster in Glasgow, but you never know what will happen next and he could end up at Rangers again down the line.
