17 Liverpool players back Mohamed Salah after Arne Slot’s explosive message

Mohamed Salah’s explosive statement yesterday sent shockwaves across Merseyside as the King of Egypt publicly called for a change of identity at Anfield, despite the very real risk of being sent off in his final game in a Liverpool shirt.

After the Reds’ 4-2 defeat to Aston Villa on Friday night, Salah posted a direct message on social media, widely interpreted as a dig at manager Arne Slot.

In it, he called for Liverpool to return to being “an attacking heavyweight that the opposition fear”, a clear reference to the Jurgen Klopp era – and called for the club’s attacking identity to be “brought back and preserved forever.”

Former and current Liverpool players are showing their support for Mohamed Salah’s statement

The biggest takeaway from Salah’s post may not be the words themselves, but who followed them.

17 past and present Liverpool players reportedly liked Salah’s Instagram post, raising further questions about dressing room behavior under Slot.

Current Liverpool stars Dominik Szoboszlai, Iraima Konate, Andy Robertson, Cody Gakpo, Curtis Jones, Wataru Endo, Ryan Gravenberch, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong were among those who publicly showed their support.

A number of former Liverpool players have also acted in the role, including Roberto Firmino, Jordan Henderson, Georginio Wijnaldum, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adrián, Luis Díaz and former vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Responses from Curtis Jones and Hugo Ekitike, who responded with clapping and handshake emojis respectively, fueled speculation that Salah’s frustration may be shared across the ranks of the current squad.

With Liverpool currently sitting in fifth place in the Premier League and fighting for Champions League qualification on the final day, public support has raised fresh concerns about whether Slot still retains the confidence of the dressing room.

Steven Gerrard reacts to Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah’s message

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard also weighed in on Salah’s statement and suggested the post could be a sign of deeper problems behind the scenes at Anfield.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Gerrard said:

“Wow, Listen, that’s very interesting. Mo Salah doesn’t talk much, and he doesn’t tweet, and he doesn’t post like that.

“So, I think he’s sending a message without saying that things in that Liverpool dressing room are not right. The identity is not there, and it hurts him to see it in front of his eyes.”

Gerrard’s comments are likely to add further scrutiny to Slott’s position as Liverpool head into a crucial summer following a turbulent campaign.

With many of his teammates rallying behind Salah, Slot’s time at the club could be coming to an end.
