Windsor Spitfires Sign 2026 OHL First Round Pick Lauchlan Whelan – Hockey Writers –

While the summer heats up, the Windsor Spitfires continue to focus on the 2026-27 Ontario Hockey League (OHL) season with an important signing on Tuesday.

Spitfires general manager Bill Bowler has been busy since the 2025-26 season ended in early May. After being eliminated by the Memorial Cup Champion Kitchener Rangers in the Western Conference Championship, the club has been retooling its roster in preparation for September. With prospects like forward Ty Bergeron (2025 OHL Draft) and defenseman Sam Wathier (2024 OHL Draft) locked in, the process continued Tuesday with another big signing.

Whelan Signs For Spitfires

The club made it official on Tuesday by signing 2026 OHL first round forward Lauchlan Whelan to an OHL Scholarship and Development Agreement.

The 6-foot, 165-pound Coburg native was selected 16th overall in the draft, which was held in Kingston, Ontario in mid-June. Last season, he played for the Quinte Red Devils U16 AAA, his third season with that program. In 34 games, he had 32 goals and 54 points, along with another 12 goals and 15 points in eight playoff games.

Whelan attended the Spitfires’ Draft Orientation in late June and was all smiles throughout the event. You could tell he really enjoyed being a part of it. In his press conference, he said that this signing is a big moment for him and his family and he is looking forward to doing anything to help the organization.

“I’m incredibly honored to sign with (the Spitfires),” Whelan said. “It’s a special moment for me and my family because of all the sacrifices that have been made to get here. I thank the organization for believing in me, and I know that this is just the beginning. I’m happy to come every day with a strong work ethic, good character, continue to improve and do whatever I can to help the team succeed.”

As soon as Bowler took the stage in Kingston, he didn’t hesitate to pick Whelan. Young brings quick, exciting speed to the offense and likes to play the 200-foot game. Bowler said Whelan is the type of player the fans will enjoy.

“(Whelan) is a strong and talented striker,” he said. “He is competitive on both ends of the ice and we look forward to his exciting play. We welcome him and his family to the Spitfires!”

A Golden Opportunity for Youth?

With the big signing, where does Whelan fit into the Spitfires’ 2026-27 line-up? Last season, the Spitfires continued to run with a number of top-notch veterans on the roster. However, now they are seeing a lot of those veterans graduating. From captain Liam Greentree (New York Rangers) to forward AJ Spellacy (Chicago Blackhawks), and Michigan State University commit Ethan Belchetz (Utah Mammoth) and University of Michigan commit Jack Nesbitt (Philadelphia Flyers), there are holes on the roster that won’t be easily replaced.

While Bowler has signed Bergeron and Detroit Red Wings prospect Michal Svrcek up front, it’s still a good chance Whelan can not only get on the roster and contribute but maybe step up before too long.

Spitfires head coach, Greg Walters, has never been shy about playing anyone who works hard and is fit, regardless of size. In 2024-25, injuries piled up and forward Ethan Garden found playing time with his relentless style of play. Last season, first-round pick John McLaughlin never stopped walking on the ice and earned the coaches’ confidence early in the season. He has moved up the ranks and should have a strong chance at a top six spot in September.

That doesn’t mean Whelan is waiting for it, though. He told us at Draft Orientation that, even though he may have moved up the list, everything has to be earned.

“It’s just an opportunity, another place to prove myself,” Whelan said at the camp. “Nothing has been found yet. Everything has to be worked on, something to accomplish. I have an amazing staff here to help me get to that point and I’m looking forward to next season.”

It’s been busy at the club. Now, in addition to any additional signings, they look forward to hitting the OHL ice for the summer in early August and the 2026-27 training camp in late August. While summer is in full swing, hockey is not far away.
