What’s happening in Vancouver?
Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford met with the media yesterday after firing GM Patrik Allvin. His comments certainly opened up a lot of questions about what happened to Vancouver, and where they are headed.
Thomas Drance: Rutherford: “I take full responsibility for the season.
Frank Seravalli: “So, Patrik Allvin was “GM” in name only, Jim Rutherford was driving the bus in almost every successive transaction, and he ran over Allvin today on his way out … and he backed him up again. To be sure. I’d say there’s always blood in Vancouver. But that lacks leadership.”

“I think a good portion of us all look at this and say, ‘The guy who didn’t make the decisions got fired because of the decisions that were made, which got the Vancouver Canucks into the place we’re in right now.’
I’ve always told my kids, go to the dictionary and take out the word ‘fair’ because it doesn’t exist, and it just puts you to shame.
But, I think, it’s a clear indication here that this is, you know, one of the first shoes to fall, the dominoes to fall, in what’s going to be a reorganization of the Vancouver Canucks’ front office. “

Ownership may not want Ryan Johnson as their general manager, and other teams won’t get permission to talk to him just yet
Taj: “Rutherford thought RJ should take over at GM but couldn’t sell ownership (yet)…But he’s in charge of getting the next guy when they already rejected his #1 pick? How does this make sense.”
Farhan Lalji: Rutherford said the Nashville Predators did not ask permission from the Canucks to talk to Ryan Johnson.
Rutherford added that he won’t give other teams permission to talk to Ryan until they name a new GM.
The fate of the Canucks coaching staff will have to wait
Irfaan Gaffar: It sounds like if the Canucks hire a new GM, he will decide the fate of head coach Adam Foote and his coaching staff. There will be other organizational changes and they will not rush to make big decisions.

Rutherford had known for some time that Quinn Hughes did not want to stay in Vancouver
Taj: “Rutherford went up there and admitted he knew Hughes was leaving when they traded Marcus Pettersson for a 1st round pick. How come he wasn’t fired right after that?”
Thomas Drance: Rutherford on Quinn Hughes: “Some people think Quinn left here because the team wasn’t going well, and I think he was going anyway, and the best example I can give you is Matthew Tkachuk.
He was in Calgary, they had a good team, but he left anyway.”

He wanted to go back to the US which I am close to (Quinn), I love him a lot and I respect what he did in Vancouver. The boys are working for freedom and we have to respect the fact that he had that choice and that he will exercise that choice. “
