Tottenham have made their first bid for Mateus Fernandes as West Ham talks intensify

Tottenham’s summer overhaul shows no signs of slowing down as Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape his squad ahead of the new Premier League season.

Spurs are already among the busiest clubs in the transfer market in the opening weeks of the window.

Andy Robertson was one of the first players through the door after completing his move to Liverpool.

The Scotland captain was soon followed by Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi as Tottenham rushed to strengthen their backline.

The club then completed a £52m deal for Netherlands international Jan Paul van Hecke, with the defender now reunited with De Zerbi after playing under the Italian during their time together at Brighton.

Tottenham have also added experience to their squad with the arrival of goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.

Another priority for the team is to strengthen its platform.

Newcastle star Sandro Tonali remains a hot target for De Zerbi, and reports throughout June suggested that the Italian coach viewed his colleague as a perfect fit for the style of football he wants to play in north London.

Spurs are after yet another midfielder.

Tottenham have already held talks with Tonali’s representatives as they look at whether a deal can be done. However, Newcastle are understood to be seeking a big fee for the Italy international.

Recent reports have suggested that the Magpies will only consider a sale worth closer to £100 million, and that valuation has forced Tottenham to consider making another offer.

Another player who has emerged as the best is West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes.

Man United have been strongly linked with Fernandes for much of the summer. However, Tottenham continue to position themselves as major contenders for his signature.

Talks between Spurs and West Ham have accelerated in recent days, and reports have suggested that Tottenham are making progress in talks as they try to strike a deal.

The report claims that £65 million of Spurs’ proposed offer will be paid ‘up front’, while the remaining £20 million of his asking price will be made up of performance-related bonuses and additional conditions.

The structure of the offer is designed to bring Spurs closer to West Ham’s reckoning while offering flexibility over the full cost of the deal.

The 21-year-old only joined West Ham from Southampton last year but has quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout players.

His form has attracted a number of top clubs across Europe, including Real Madrid, PSG and United, who have all been linked with the midfielder in recent weeks.

Tottenham, however, appear determined to complete the deal.

Why Tottenham are signing Mateus Fernandes

Reports suggest the club were willing to offer a more attractive financial package than rivals such as the Red Devils, and there is growing confidence that Fernandes is keen to move to north London.

West Ham are fully aware that Fernandes remains one of their most valuable assets after being relegated, and any sale would generate a significant return on the fee they paid to sign him.

For Tottenham, securing Fernandes would represent another big statement during the looming transfer window.

What has been said about Mateus Fernandes since he moved to England

Even during his time at Southampton, the plucky and inventive youngster was getting plaudits week in, week out.

Former Saints midfielder Jo Tessem praised Fernandes for his pace and being the best player during his time at St. Mary’s.

“Mateus Fernandes is on people’s radar because every week he plays his heart out, he is the best player on the football pitch from the point of view of Saints,” Tessem told the BBC Radio Solent Southampton podcast in 2025.

“I said the same about Romeo Lavia.

“I didn’t think he would last a season in the Championship and he didn’t – he left after a year – again [Fernandes] it’s on the same level, although it’s a different type of player.

“He is becoming the last midfielder in the Premier League and the clubs will not give up on that.

“He plays like a Premier League player. He passes like a Premier League player. He is quick like a Premier League player. He behaves very well in midfield.”
