The manager who was in talks with Burnley is now in charge of rivals for the Bristol City job
Bristol City have now identified Burnley manager Steven Gerrard as the front runner in the race to replace Roy Hodgson this summer.
Bristol City are targeting Gerrard after Hodgson bowed out in victory
Hodgson bowed out with a 2-0 win over Stoke City on the final day of the Championship season, ending his second title as Bristol City manager, and has admitted that another managerial role is too small.
The 78-year-old suspect said: “I don’t know what the future holds, but I didn’t seriously seek this position and, as I enjoyed returning to Bristol City, it seems unlikely that the same situation will arise again.
“If someone says ‘we need you to do a job’ and I think I might be able to maybe, but that’s a long way off. I won’t put my name there because there are a lot of managers and coaches who need jobs.

The 45-year-old’s best time was arguably north of the border at Ibrox, guiding Rangers to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020-21 campaign, and he was praised for his “fantastic” work by sports writer Joseph McBride.
Wayne Rooney was full of praise for his former England team-mate for his performance at Ibrox.
The England man is seen as a ‘big name target’ for Bristol City, and there are signs that a deal is possible, with journalist Pete O’Rourke revealing he is keen on a move to the second tier.
O’Rourke says: “He is determined to get back on the pitch soon, and would be open to a move to a Championship team.
“Maybe he thinks he can follow the same path [to Frank Lampard]go into the Championship and take over the club and possibly lead it into the Premier League.”
However, there will be competition for Gerrard’s signature, with Burnley, whose relegation from the Premier League has already been confirmed, recently entering talks.
