The delighted winger has agreed to sign for Spurs

A true star like Heung-min Son is what Tottenham Hotspur need to go to the next level.

Last season, they missed out on a lot as they finished 17th in the Premier League but since Harry Kane and Son left two years apart, Spurs have lacked world-class talent capable of destroying opponents.

Of course, finding that level of talent is not easy but it should be one of the priorities this summer for the Lilywhites.

They look good on their way to doing just that. Manchester City’s Savinho has been valued at a whopping £60m and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali is now at the top.

That would be pretty special, wouldn’t it? So, what’s the latest on that deal and the current state of play at Spurs?

Spurs are looking to sign a new player

For Tottenham, one of their main goals this summer is to strengthen the defense. They have already done so by bringing in Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson, with Brighton’s Jan Paul van Hecke expected to join.

They must also not ignore the forward line. Savinho has been hotly watched and after a year of missing out on the Brazilian’s signature, Spurs are back on the table this time and look set to finally force a move. It is reported that the City man has agreed on personal terms.

The winger is not the only attacking player on their radar. Talks are said to have been held over a shock move for Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville on the radar too.

However, if you believe that the reports coming out of France are said to close the issue of including Malick Fofana from Lyon.

Ferveur Lyonnaise say the player is on his way out of Ligue 1 and Spurs have submitted a £22m offer, including the addition of a wide player.

The Lyon star is said to have already agreed to join Spurs and may soon be on his way to London to officially sign the terms.

Why Fofana could be Tottenham’s new Son Heung-min

In Savinho, Spurs would be signing a proven Premier League winner who, despite his struggles at City last season, can change the game on the right of the forward line.

He is an excellent dribbler and a brilliant creator. He registered 13 assists for the Citizens in 2024/25, his first season in English football.

While the Brazilian adds depth and quality on the right, Fofana will add in spades on the left side of the attack.

I am only 21 years old, there are fears that Spurs may sign another Wilson Odobert or Matys Tel but we urge you to reserve judgment until you see him play. After all, this is one of the most interesting players in France on his day.

Like many at Tottenham, Fofana was injured during the 2025/26 campaign which meant he made just 16 appearances, scoring twice and assisting one goal. However, it was the campaign before he showed his true colours, scoring 11 goals and registering six assists either side of his 20th birthday.

The young Frenchman has been making waves in Lyon for several years now. At the start of the 2024/25 season, scout Jacek Kulig was comparing him to Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior in terms of his combination of ball control, brilliance, speed and two-footed lateral movement.

Sure, he may not be replicating Vini’s absolute numbers but this is a fun winger, all right. Those characteristics are also similar to a certain Heung-min Son.

Thomas Frank, in particular, really missed the South Korean in the first half of last season after leaving LA FC in the MLS, but they could get some of Son’s best qualities with the arrival of Fofana.

Like Son, European football expert Neal Gardner points out that a young player ticks boxes that include “work ethic” and “striking the ball.” Meanwhile Como scout Ben Mattinson notes that Fofana’s best qualities see him thrive “in transition and 1v1’s.” He can play “any side and be so quick in the first five yards.” That sounds like a Son, doesn’t it?

Malick Fofana from Lyon

To quantify that comparison, Scout Lab even revealed that in the 2024/25 season, Son was one of the 20 players most similar to the Lyon man in Europe’s top five leagues. In this list there were also players from the sides such as Anthony Gordon, Gabriel Martinelli, Rafael Leao and Bryan Mbeumo. This season, he has been like Bukayo Saka and the aforementioned Odobert.

At this point, the 21-year-old ranks in the top 12% of similar players in Europe for 90 consecutive games at 4.19.

A direct, fast and confident striker, Spurs can finally find an heir to Son’s throne on the left side by confirming this move.
