Phillies Designate Bryse Wilson for Assignment

The Phillies selected the right-hander Bryse Wilson via assignment, via Matt Gelb of The Athletic. On the left Kyle Backhus he is expected to return to the team. That’s right Max Lazar it goes back to Triple-A. Gelb adds that right hand Alan Rangel he is the person who will be returned and carried out on Monday.

Wilson was added to the roster earlier this week after triggering an upward movement clause in his contract. He pitched two scoreless innings in the bullpen on Thursday. Wilson was seen as the man to take over Andrew PainterPlace in rotation. The young right-hander was benched Wednesday after a rough start against the Marlins. Instead, you’ll head to DFA limbo after appearing once.

Wilson, 28, spent nearly the entire season in the Phillies organization. He joined the team on a minor league contract in December. The veteran righty failed for a roster spot out of camp and didn’t pitch well in Triple-A. He was released in early June, but soon re-signed a new league deal. There may be another exit situation in play there.

Wilson has been a useful swingman as recently as two years ago with the Brewers. He pitched 181 1/3 innings for a 3.72 ERA with Milwaukee from 2023 to 2024. Wilson posted a 6.65 ERA in 20 games with the White Sox last year. He was in and out of the list many times. Wilson has been striking out more than a batter per inning at Lehigh Valley this season, but has had a tough time keeping runs on the board (6.29 ERA). All but one of his 12 appearances came as a start.

It appears that Rangel will get the first crack at taking Painter’s rotation spot. His last Triple-A start was Wednesday, so he will be rested for tomorrow’s game against the Nationals. The righty made one appearance in the big leagues earlier in the season, allowing a run over three innings in a late April loss to the Cubs.

Rangel got his first crack at the majors last season after a long major league career. He posted a paltry 8:6 strikeout-to-walk ratio, but was able to limit the damage, allowing three earned runs over 11 frames out of the bullpen. The 28-year-old has been very active as a starter this year. He has an ERA under 4.00 with a 24.8% strikeout rate in 70 innings with the Iron Pigs.

Backhus has been out since late April with elbow inflammation. He has made five rehab appearances in Triple-A. The rest came to the Phillies in a trade with the Diamondbacks. Backhus broke camp with the team, but was selected in early April. He had returned to the senior team a few weeks before the elbow problem arose.

Lazar was called earlier this week. He made three appearances out of the bullpen, pitching four innings in low-profile situations. Lazar opened the year on the injured list with an oblique strain. He is in his second minor league option year. Righties could return to the majors the next time the Phillies need some length in the bullpen.
