Nottingham Forest have a strong interest in signing another Argentine Bergvall
Nottingham Forest have entered the race to sign Estudiantes midfielder Mikel Amondarain, who could be brought in as a replacement for Lucas Bergvall.
After losing Elliot Anderson to Manchester City at the start of the window, Forest are still looking for a new midfielder, but it could be very difficult to replace the England international.
Anderson proved his worth at the World Cup, averaging 56.5 pass accuracy per 90, which ranked him third in the team, while his 6.7 defense per 90 was the second highest among Thomas Tuchel’s players.
As such, the Tricky Trees will need to sign a midfielder who is comfortable with catching and strong defensively this summer, and that search has led them to Amondarain.
In the 2026 Liga Professional Clausura, Argentina’s defensive qualities have been on display, ranking second in the Estudiantes team in terms of recovery figures out of 90, having an average of 6.2.
However, the 21-year-old is also capable of going further, having scored four goals and provided three assists in 40 appearances since breaking through to his first team.
Former Estudiantes manager Eduardo Dominguez was full of praise for the midfielder who performed well in August last year, saying: “Mikel makes us very happy. He played naturally and did very well. It was as if he had been with us for a long time. He seemed to know Santiago (Ascacíbar) and Cristian (Medina) by heart. It’s amazing how naturally he played. It’s rare.”

According to a report from Ole (via Sports Witness), Nottingham Forest now have a strong desire to sign Amondarain, and Estudiantes are willing to approve the sale at a reasonable price.
The Argentine club have already turned down a £5.2m bid from Real Betis, providing a reference to where Forest may need to start negotiations.
However, he remains under contract until the summer of 2028, meaning the Argentine side are in a strong negotiating position.

Forest are still looking to sign Lucas Bergvall
While the young Argentine could be signed as an alternative to Bergvall, Forest are still trying to sign the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder.
It has been widely reported that Spurs have now turned U, and are willing to approve the sale, which is good news for Oliver Glasner’s side, who are willing to make a new bid, after receiving an initial offer of £38m.
However, Forest may need to shell out around half of the £116m raised by selling Anderson, if they are to get Bergvall’s deal over the line, with the north Londoners holding on to £50m.
