Newcastle are “leading” to sign the 22-year-old and are already in talks over personal terms

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will look back on the current season with mixed feelings after admitting it has been a “challenge”.

The Magpies go into Sunday’s final home game of the Premier League campaign against West Ham knowing that the Magpies, who have reached the knockout stages of the Champions League and the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup, have not had much success in the league.

Howe’s are in 13th place with two games left, 13 points behind the fifth place they finished last season.

Asked how he would look back on the 48-year-old campaign, whose future is in doubt as a result, he said: “I think time will tell, to some extent, but I think my first thought now in answering that question is that I will look back with almost mixed feelings.

“Some big, big highs, some great experiences, memorable games, our successful games and some challenges and times where we had to really dig deep and question ourselves and try to come back and fight, so it’s a real mix.

“(It might) be different from the other seasons I’ve had here, they’ve been more… consistent success because it’s never been like that, but a sense of smoothness during the season, of consistent good feelings. This has been a challenge.”

The Hammers will arrive on Tyneside engaged in a tooth-and-nail battle with Tottenham to avoid joining Wolves and Burnley in the Sky Bet Championship next season, and Howe admits the woes of the two London sides provide a valuable lesson for the rest of the top flight.

He said: “It’s a good thing in the Premier League in that you don’t know what’s going to happen, but the challenges are there for every club – including us – you have to keep improving, you have to keep improving to stay in the competition.

Newcastle announced on Saturday that defender Emil Krafth will leave the club when his contract expires this summer, ending a seven-year spell on Tyneside.

Kieran Trippier is also set to leave and there are question marks over Anthony Gordon’s future, and a report has now revealed that the PIF will significantly back Howe to rebuild his squad this summer.

Newcastle and Liverpool are “frontrunners” for Camara

According to Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke, Newcastle’s owners will be ambitious in the market this summer, starting their business in Ligue 1.

Indeed, having already launched a move for Reims goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, the Magpies are now one of the “frontrunners” for Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara.

“Monaco is one of the teams that bring in players, develop them and sell them at the right price.

“That’s why these Premier League strikers were encouraged that maybe Camara could be awarded away from the Principality this summer.

“As things stand now, you have Liverpool and Newcastle who are probably the two best players for the Senegal international.”

The 22-year-old has played 23 times in the French top flight this season, scoring once, providing four assists and an average of 2.3 tackles per game.

French media also reported that Newcastle are ahead of Liverpool because they have already spoken to the player’s agents to discuss terms.

With 41 caps for Senegal already to his name, Newcastle will be getting a player with “huge” potential according to Magpies content creator Pete Davey.
