Nelly Korda wins in Mexico by 4 shots for the 3rd title of the season

PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Mexico — Nelly Korda scored a knockout on Sunday and went seven shots back to finish with a 3-under 69 and a 4-over victory at the Riviera Maya Open at Mayakoba for her third win of the young season.
One week after Korda crushed the field at the Chevron Championship for her third career major, she left everyone feeling hopeless at El Camaleon with precision that carried the No. 1 player in women’s golf to another dominant victory.
Korda went 60 holes in a row without a bogey, a streak that ended when he no longer cared.
He had six shots on the 18th when he sent him right and deep into the heather, he didn’t get the golf ball. He hit a short hole in the bunker, the next he went into the gallery and finished with a 20-foot bogey putt, only his second of the tournament.
Korda extended his arm and recklessly threw his right fist with all the strength he had left.
He finished at 17-under 271, four shots ahead of Thailand’s Arpichaya Yubol, who celebrated his 24th birthday with a 70 to finish alone in second. Yu Liu from China (69) is one of the shooters.
No one had much of a chance against Korda, who became the first player since Annika Sorenstam in 2001 to start a season with nothing as bad as finishing second in six events.

Korda started with three goals, then it was over. He holed a 12-foot eagle putt from the collar of the par-5 fifth hole, followed with a 10-foot birdie putt from the fairway on No.
He didn’t need to do anything else, following through with 10 straight pars until he took his hands off the wheel on the final hole.
Asked if he was playing the best golf of his career, Korda declined.
“I’m just having fun and I love the competition. I like to travel to places like Mexico, all over the world. I’m just having fun,” he said.
Early times have been moved up to avoid thunderstorms along the Mexican coast looking across the Caribbean Sea. It was still hot, and Korda hit himself on the head with a water bottle as he exited the 16th fairway. Nothing could heal him.
Korda was able to laugh off his mistake on the final hole that prevented him from matching or surpassing his major margin of victory, set last week with his five-shot victory in Houston.
“On the last hole here I was humbled by golf,” he said. “I had a pretty smooth day and on the last hole you like to be a little humble. You put in the work. Everyone here puts in the work. Sometimes it works.”
She has now won 18 times on the LPGA, making the 27-year-old the youngest American with 18 titles since 23-year-old Nancy Lopez won her 18th in 1980.
Arkansas senior Maria Jose Marin, who thrilled the crowd with her Augusta National Women’s Amateur title last month, had a 69-69 weekend to finish fifth. A top 10 will qualify him for next week’s Mizuho Americas Open, but he has a playoff.
Korda also skips next week after winning two in a row. He talked about his lack of energy this week, but also confirmed that he is working instead of vacationing at a Mexican resort.
“I’m going to enjoy a few days off,” Korda said.
