Mets Placed Marcus Semien on the injured list

The Mets announced that pitcher Marcus Semien was placed on the ten-day injured list with a left hip flexor strain. Striker Ronny Mauricio called to take his place in the lineup. The Mets also recalled their right-hander Daniel Duarte. The pitting staff had an opening behind the left David Peterson it was sold to the Cubs. That’s right Jonathan Pintaro27th man in yesterday’s doubleheader, also recalled to Triple-A Syracuse. SNY’s Chelsea Janes reported on Semien’s IL placement before the official announcement.
It is unclear when Semien injured his hip or how serious the injury is. Semien played in both of yesterday’s games against the Cubs, although he did not perform well. He went 1-8 on the day and committed two errors in the nightcap, part of six errors from the Mets’ infield.
Losing Semien to the injured list is not a loss for the club, as he is struggling through the worst season of his career. The 35-year-old has a .214/.271/.341 line on the year, which translates to a 73 wRC+. He’s been a solid outfielder throughout his career but his grades have dipped this season, as he’s credited with five Defensive Runs Saved and two Outs Above Average. FanGraphs considers him the underclassman of the year.
Perhaps the hip issue is something that has been nagging him for a while, which may partially explain Semien’s lackluster season. Better yet, resting and fixing the problem can get him back on track. As recently as last year, he was able to achieve 2.1 wins over his replacement in the eyes of FanGraphs. His offense was subpar but his glove work and baserunning made him a valuable player.
The Mets sent an outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Rangers in a one-man trade this winter. The Mets were hoping this would improve the team’s defense, which has not worked so far. The swap involves taking on more money each year, although Semien’s contract runs out after 2028 and Nimmo is signed through 2030.
With Semien out, the Mets could give Mauricio a run at the keystone. Although he was once one of the team’s best players, he has yet to play a regular role in the majors. He started in 2023 but missed all of 2024 with a torn ACL. He was back with the big league team in the last few months of 2025 and hit .226/.293/.369 in 61 games. This year, he has been up and down with the Mets. A broken thumb in early May kept him on the injured list until this week. Mauricio is in his last season.
In addition to Mauricio, Brett Baty again AJ Ewing he can see the time in the place. Baty logged 373 innings at second base last year. Due to Semien’s presence, he has not played there this season. He played third most of the time Bo Bichette it included a moment Francisco Lindoralthough Lindor was out of IL yesterday. Ewing was an outfielder in his professional career but played second in the minors.
