Mariners Place Randy Arozarena on the Injured List

8:14 p.m.: Seattle officially announced all three moves: the IL reassignment of Arozarena, the selection of Washington, and the transfer of Wilson to the 60-day injured list. Wilson has been out since late April with a broken left thumb. According to the MLB.com injury tracker, he was recently sidelined due to persistent soreness and is weighing up season-ending surgery.
7:51 p.m.: The Mariners are putting Randy Arozarena on the 10-day injured list, reports Adam Jude of the Seattle Times. Seattle’s left fielder hasn’t played since Friday because of a strained left hamstring, so he’ll be out until June 13.
Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports that the Mariners expect it to be a short stay for IL. Arozarena is dealing with a minor problem that could leave him unavailable for the next few days. The team can only postpone the placement of the IL by three days, so Seattle chose to position the IL tonight rather than wait a few days and risk the Arozarena after the following week.
A quirk of the roster will lead to the first major league call-up for the 26-year-old outfielder Curtis Washington Jr.Classification reports. He will be selected from the MLB roster and available for tonight’s game against the Orioles. Washington plays High-A Everett, which is 30 miles outside of Seattle. The Triple-A team, the Tacoma Rainiers, is on the road this week for a series in Salt Lake. Washington can be a quick drive to T-Mobile Park. The M’s will need to open up a spot on the 40-man roster but can do so by transferring an infielder. Will Wilson on the 60-day injured list.
Washington, a Purdue product, is a former 19th round pick. He is hitting .190 in 44 games at High-A this season. He will certainly be designated for assignment or cut out this week but he will collect a major league payday while joining the MLB clubhouse. If tonight’s game is anything but a blowout, maybe Dan Wilson can put him in as a hitter or a defensive reliever and write his name on the MLB box score.
Jude notices that striker Connor Joe has been released from Tacoma’s roster and will head to Seattle for tomorrow’s game. Joe is already on the 40-man roster and has appeared in 18 major league games this season. He will fill in as the right bencher Victor Robles he is likely to replace Arozarena in left field next week. Josh Naylor again Luke Raley and everyday ones, which were pushing Miles Mastrobuoni again Rob Refsnyder in tonight’s lineup against the Baltimore righty Brandon Young. Dan Wilson will likely only be a backup catcher Mitch Garver and Washington Jr. available on the bench today.
On another programming note, today’s game marks a formality Photo by JP Crawford first appearance as Seattle’s third baseman. The longtime shortstop has been activated from the minor 10-day injured list with a right hand injury. He leads and mans the hot corner, his first action there since the 2018 season with Philadelphia.
The Mariners have telegraphed the position change, as Crawford has been working at third base for the past month. It is thanks to the former Glove winner that he is not only on board but actively spoke to the team about this. Rookie Colt Emerson is the franchise’s longtime shortstop, so Crawford wanted to expand his versatility before his first trip to free agency. That allows Emerson to stay in his natural position while making a case for the front office to bring Crawford back to a multi-year deal in the offseason.
