Diaz, Kane and Mbappe scored as the visitors edged out the first leg

Bayern Munich held Real Madrid to a 2-1 win in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final at the Bernabeu.
Luis Diaz scored just before the break following Bayern’s first half, before Harry Kane doubled the advantage 20 seconds into the restart, but Kylian Mbappe’s 74th-minute goal sparked a revival for the 15-time winners.
There were plenty of chances for the hosts as they pushed for an equalizer in a thrilling first leg in Madrid, but they paid for their lack of performance for most of the game as Vincent Kompany’s men grabbed a vital goal on their return to the Allianz Arena next week.

Diaz scored in the first half for Bayern
Dayot Upamecano missed a great chance to capitalize on Bayern’s early pressure after hitting a shot from inside the six-yard box wide of the goal after Harry Kane headed home from a free-kick.
But Real came alive after 10 minutes and provided a reminder of their threat when Vinicius Junior teed up Kylian Mbappe, whose shot was well saved by Manuel Neuer.
Minutes later, another lightning fast break saw Brazil cut inside and let fly, which the Bayern stopper had to save again.
Real continued to threaten on the stroke of half-time but their slackness at the back continued to prove depleted, with errors from Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andriy Lunin providing great chances for Kane and Serge Gnabry to find the net.
Once again, Mbappe was a threat at the other end, latching on to the ball before forcing Neuer to make another save from a tight angle.
Five minutes before half-time, Bayern were ahead with a deserved possession after a routine move that saw Gnabry play in Diaz, who opened his body and slotted the ball into the back of the net.
Kane scores early but it’s a real rally
It took the visitors less than 30 seconds to double their lead after the break, Kane side-footing the ball into the net from the edge of the box for his 49th goal of the season.
Olise harassed Alvaro Carrerras on the right throughout the game and almost scored a stunning solo goal after a pass from left back and three or four others before the shot.
Another Bayern goal seemed to be the only result as Real again gave the ball away in the defensive third, allowing Kane to advance but his shot was blocked, with Upamecano’s header from the corner just falling to Lunin all over the sea again.
It made Vinicius’s missed opportunity very costly for the hosts, after a mistake that allowed the Brazilian to make a good run and beat Neuer, but he managed to find the side netting for the equaliser.
Substitute Jude Bellingham made an immediate impact after coming on, driving forward before finding Mbappe who forced a fine save from Neuer, and Eder Militao then headed over from a good spot.
Real suddenly came alive and Mbappe could not bend the ball to the right of the post after a good connection with Vinicius.
The goal finally arrived for Real to open the tie again for good, when Alexander-Arnold slid in Mbappe with a trademark pass – with England manager Thomas Tuchel watching not a little – which the French striker just turned off the line.
The mood changed completely inside the Bernabeu when Bayern suddenly looked vulnerable, Vinicius denied a penalty shortly after Federico Valverde let fly from distance, Neuer then denied Vincius again.
The German player was kept busy with another dangerous shot by Militao from the edge of the box as the home team really increased the pressure.
Substitute Jamal Musiala then failed to keep his shot wide of the post after his teammate Alphonso Davies headed Olise’s ball into his path.
The action didn’t end as Mbappe found space on the edge of the box but the shot that was put aside was deflected just as Neuer was focused.
They couldn’t find the all-important goal though and Bayern managed to hold on to what looked to be a crucial lead in the second leg, although based on the second half, the tie is far from over.
