Manchester United are now preparing a bid for the “surprise” star, who could join after Ederson.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Ederson is close to completing a move to Old Trafford from Atalanta, but a number of other deals could go ahead, and two more midfielders could arrive before the transfer deadline.

Romano says: “And don’t forget that this is the first time for Man Utd. They will do a lot of other things in the market. At least one more midfielder because Casemiro is leaving, Manuel Ugarte is leaving, so Man Utd will be very busy in the coming weeks.”

The deal will be completed at the beginning of July, and the 26-year-old could replace compatriot Casemiro, having featured in a defensive role regularly throughout his career so far.

As revealed by Romano, Ugarte’s future is up in the air again, with United willing to entertain £35m bids for the Uruguayan, who is already a target for Premier League rivals Newcastle United.

Therefore, signing at least one more midfielder would be very important, and the Red Devils have now set their sights on the Premier League star.

In a post on X, journalist Gianluigi Longari also said that Man United want to add more to the midfield behind Ederson, and are now ‘preparing an offer’ for West Ham United star Mateus Fernandes.

A bid could be submitted ‘in the coming days’, and there have been reports that West Ham may now be willing to cash in for just £43m – £52m, having been relegated from the Premier League.

Liverpool are also preparing to make a move for the Portuguese maestro, but United are looking to steal a march on their rivals.

Fernandes was hailed as “impressive” by Mark Carlaw of the West Ham Way podcast, and Roy Keane is a big fan, with the midfielder famous for ranking him above the likes of Alex Scott, Carlos Baleba, Casemiro and Enzo Fernandez.

Baleba and Scott have also been linked with a move to Old Trafford, and recently negotiations have been opened regarding the AFC Bournemouth star’s contract.

Fernandes had three goals and four assists in 34 Premier League appearances for West Ham last season, and at 21 years of age he still has plenty of time to develop his game even further.
