Manchester United’s summer rebuild could still have one big surprise left, with the club expected to make a statement on signings before the transfer window closes.

Michael Carrick has already strengthened his squad with Youri Tielemans, Andrey Santos and experienced goalkeeper Karl Darlow, but there is a feeling that a big deal is yet to come.

United have taken a more controlled approach rather than spending a lot of money quickly on one good target.

Tielemans arrived from Aston Villa for £35 million, while Santos joined Chelsea in a deal worth £48 million.

Those additions have improved the pitch, but fans will still be waiting for another high-profile signing before the 2026/27 campaign gets underway.

According to Football Insider, Manchester City’s former financial adviser, Stefan Borson, believes that United are deliberately saving money for one big purchase before the deadline.

Brson suggested that United had been working on their club needs in stages, finalizing low-cost deals before committing big money to the target.

The departures of top earners such as Casemiro and Jadon Sancho have also helped create more room in the wage bill.

“The only problem is that that approach can end up competing with teams that spend a lot of money,” he said.

“Traditionally, although they have managed to get away with one or two very good tax and value deals, the general spending has not worked for most of these teams, especially in terms of wages.

“There is that connection. But I think, United are probably saving for a big, one big purchase between now and the close of the window.

“So they are left with powder, and they seem to go one after the other in the group.”

The final signing should address real weaknesses

The question is not just whether United will spend big, but where that money should go.

The Guardian reports that Carrick is still looking for another midfielder and is also considering a left-back to provide competition for Luke Shaw.

United should reject expensive signings just to create excitement.

Tielemans and Santos already give the central midfielder a lot of control, so a powerful ball-carrier or a running full-back can provide better balance than another top striker.

Brson’s prediction sounds realistic because United has carefully spent and reduced its salary commitments.

However, the success of the window will depend on whether the final signing solves a clear strategic problem.

A blockbuster fee will create headlines, but Carrick needs a player who can quickly improve the starting eleven and help United compete with Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool.
