Liverpool just got a new Szoboszlai

Liverpool central midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai emerged again to put in an impressive performance against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Hungary international was chosen by Arne Slot to line up in the middle of the park alongside Ryan Gravenberch, with Alexis Mac Allister left on the bench, and caught the eye with his display.

It was his corner that Virgil van Dijk headed in for the game-winning goal, when he placed his set-piece in the perfect spot for the captain to make it 2-1.

In addition to his assists, Szoboszlai completed 93% (54/58) of his attempted passes throughout the game, providing a reliable opportunity to get off the ball on the outside.

Although Mohamed Salah may end up receiving the award in his farewell campaign with the Reds, the Hungarian star deserves to be awarded as the club’s Player of the Season.

Why Dominik Szoboszlai is Liverpool’s player of the season

No other Liverpool player has played more consistently for the club in the 2025/26 campaign, as he has always stood out as the main man in the slot.

Only Virgil van Dijk has played more minutes (2,970) than Szoboszlai (2,783) in the Premier League, but the Dutch defender has had his fair share of slips, with four mistakes leading to shots, goals or penalties for the opposition.

The 25-year-old has notched up 12 goals and nine assists in 48 appearances in all competitions, providing a formidable threat alongside his horse-like play in the middle of the park.

Szoboszlai, who has been required to play ten games at right back and ten as a right midfielder, has performed well on and off the ball in the Premier League for the Reds.

The former RB Leipzig player has made a huge contribution to the team’s performance both on and off the pitch, while always being available, which is why he deserves to be Liverpool’s player of the season.

Liverpool already have Dominik Szoboszlai next

In Everton’s 2-1 Merseyside derby win, another player showed that Slot already has his next version of Szoboszlai waiting in the wings to shine.

Curtis Jones, a central midfielder, has been asked to fill in at right back for the Reds, despite Jeremie Frimpong being on the bench, and he has done an impressive job for Liverpool.

Despite playing at right back, the Englishman was heading home in an unfamiliar area and was the only player in the game to have touched more than 100 balls.

As well as ranking first in the game in touches, Jones made the most balls in the game, between both teams, as he won the title 16 times.

His positioning, despite not being a right back, was fantastic throughout the game, positioning his body in the right position to protect the ball and protect himself from being exposed by the home team.

He had only started three games at right back this season before the trip to Hill Dickinson, as Szoboszlai is often preferred in that role if the natural option is not selected, but his lack of experience was not evident.

Jones started behind Salah, who scored the opening goal of the game, and his impressive defensive play meant the Egyptian midfielder did not have to make many strong yards defensively, allowing him to focus on the match-winner.

The Liverpool academy graduate has started 13 of 29 Premier League games this season, but the 25-year-old has shown he could be the next Szoboszlai for Slot.

He has the technical quality and athletic qualities to be an excellent option in midfield and at right back for the Reds, just as Szoboszlai has been throughout this season.

Jones may not be able to score four free-kicks in the Premier League season, but he has shown that he can be a very important player for the Dutch manager.
