Inter Milan won the Serie A title

The San Siro erupted on Sunday night as Inter Milan were crowned Serie A champions for the 21st time in their history, beating Parma 2-0 with three games to go to end Napoli’s reign as title holders.

Marcus Thuram broke the deadlock in the first half, sliding in for Piotr Zielinski to finish across the face of the goal inside the box.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan swept home the second in the 80th minute after substitute Lautaro Martinez’s byline drive cleared the goal, and the Scudetto was theirs.

It is a surprising achievement for Cristian Chivu, who arrived in the summer with no top management experience and has already delivered a title in his first season with the club.

Federico Dimarco set the record for assists in a single season in Serie A with 18 in the league, while Thuram was in exceptional form during the last game, registering eight goals in April alone.

Inter ends the campaign having scored 81 goals in Serie A, a figure bettered only by Barcelona and Bayern Munich in Europe’s top five leagues.

Former champions Napoli are left to watch after a goalless draw in Como on Saturday. The gap between these teams is 12.

Inter also have the Coppa Italia final against Lazio on May 13 in their sights, a double within reach.

Juventus drop points at home to relegated Verona

While Inter celebrated, Juventus squandered an opportunity to prove their Champions League qualification case, being held to a frustrating 1-1 home draw by already relegated Hellas Verona at the Allianz Stadium.

Kieron Bowie stunned the hosts on 34 minutes after Gleison Bremer gifted inside his own box, and Juventus were unable to respond until Dusan Vlahovic – introduced at the break – curled a stunning free-kick into the bottom corner on 62 minutes.

From there, Juventus threw everything at the Verona backline but goalkeeper Ivan Montipo was equal to most of the efforts, denying Francisco Conceicao twice in the final quarter before Iker Bravo’s Edon Zhegrova hit the post in stoppage time.

The result leaves Juventus three points clear of fifth-placed Como in the Champions League final race.

Verona, having lost 21 games in Serie A this season, will welcome Como next weekend in a game that could decide the standings of European games.

Tomori’s red card compounded AC Milan’s woes

It was a similarly difficult afternoon for AC Milan, who lost 2-0 to Sassuolo as they were reduced to ten men in the 24th minute.

Domenico Berardi put the hosts ahead just five minutes from time, while Fikayo Tomori – already on a yellow card – brought down Armand Lauriente and was sent off in the first quarter of an hour.

Lauriente then added a second in the 47th minute, converting a one-two with Kristian Thorstvedt to put the result beyond doubt.

Milan finished the match without a single shot on target, posting an xG of 0.24 across 90 minutes in another shocking attacking display from Massimiliano Allegri’s side.
