Spurs are in talks with Newcastle for Sandro Tonali
According to popular transfer expert Fabrizio Romano on YouTube, Tottenham secured Fernandes for a club record, guaranteed transfer fee of £85 million, with no add-ons or future sale clauses.
The formal clarification of the deal is exactly what West Ham wanted to get the deal down the line.
While Fernandes represents a major coup for manager Roberto De Zerbi, Romano revealed that Tottenham are far from satisfied.
The club are locked in talks with Newcastle United to sign Italy international Sandro Tonali as they revamp their engine room.
“Tottenham came with a guaranteed fee of £85 million guaranteed, no additions, no sales clauses in the future. West Ham got the guarantee they wanted. I told you the price three or four weeks ago: £85 million to sign Matheus Fernandes.
“And now the player is signed for £ 85 million. I told you in a video two days ago that the payment terms would be important – they did not want a structure with too many additions or complicated routes to the price. Now the price has been fully reached: £ 85 million, for the player most wanted by Roberto De Zerbi.
“We will continue to follow the next moves, because Tottenham are still in talks with Newcastle about Sandro Tonali. We will have to see how that happens. But they are certainly working hard to rebuild the midfielder.”
Reporter Ben Jacobs also confirmed the club’s ambitious summer plans for X, clarifying that Spurs view Tonali as a completely different prospect to Fernandes.
Rather than choosing between the top two operators, the North London division aims to complete both deals at the same time.
Protecting Tonali will not be straightforward, however, as Manchester City are tracking the Newcastle star.
The Premier League giants are keen to bolster their depth with a second signing after their record signing Elliot Anderson.
Spurs are eyeing Sandro Tonali as an alternative transfer to Mateus Fernandes. The idea is to do both.

Spurs built a great team under De Zerbi
After navigating a tumultuous domestic campaign last season, Tottenham have backed De Zerbi with significant financial support to implement his trademark style.
They have already signed Premier League veterans such as Andy Robertson and Martin Dubravka on free transfers.

Spurs also signed two defenders, Marcos Senesi on a free, and Jan Paul van Hecke for £52m from Brighton.
The addition of Fernandes, coupled with the potential breakout of Tonali represents a major statement of intent.
There is no doubt that Spurs will be a team to watch next season.
