Expectations, statistics and where to watch the World Cup match no one wants to play

As one coach leaves, another will look to prove he’s up for the job.

Didier Deschamps’ 14-year reign as France manager will come to an end tomorrow night following the World Cup bronze medal match against England in Miami.

Deschamps guided LesBleus to the World Cup title in 2018 and second place in 2022 but failed to manage a third consecutive final as his incredibly talented side came up short against Spain on Tuesday night.

Critics of the former France captain say his conservative approach has brought the team back over the years but his all-out attacking strategy in this tournament – his usual XI consists of four forwards – left them unbalanced and Spain fed on their vulnerability.

Deschamps is likely to fill the gap with former teammate Zinedine Zidane who is sitting at the helm.

England aren’t thinking about a change just yet, but manager Thomas Tuchel has a lot of work to do to win back the hearts and minds of the English public still reeling from Wednesday’s loss to Argentina.

The Three Lions took the lead 10 minutes into the second half through Anthony Gordon but tried to hang on to that opportunity with Tuchel’s poor gameplan, and substitutions, ultimately backfired as the South Americans scored twice late on to win 2-1.

William Saliba will not play due to a back injury that has hampered him for most of the tournament and forced him to leave half an hour before the start of the match against Spain. Back-up goalkeeper Brice Samba also has a knock so Mike Maignan should continue between the sticks.

Captain Kylian Mbappe is expected to start as he chases the Golden Boot but he will have a very different cast as Deschamps changes a number of his first team to give his teammates a chance to impress.

Saliba’s Arsenal team-mate Declan Rice is set to be rested after suffering illness and a back injury while Reece James is also expected to sit out.

The likes of Dean Henderson, Kobbie Mainoo and Dan Burn could all start.
