David Ornstein shares Sandro Tonali review as ‘big money’ Tottenham contract

Tottenham’s pursuit of Sandro Tonali continues to make headlines as the club move forward with plans to strengthen Roberto De Zerbi’s midfield options.

The Italian has emerged as one of Spurs’ top targets in the summer window.

Many reports have suggested that Tottenham are willing to make a huge financial commitment in an attempt to bring Tonali to north London, with Alfredo Pedulla even suggesting they could spend around £100 million.

Fabrizio Romano recently reported that Spurs were preparing to open club-to-club talks with Newcastle after completing other key deals such as Jan Paul van Hecke, Marcos Senesi and Andy Robertson.

Subsequent reports revealed that Tonali is ready to move and that discussions have already taken place with the 26-year-old player’s camp.

The Lilywhites are chasing a big-money Italian contract.

Although there have been suggestions that Tottenham have received encouragement from the player’s representatives, Newcastle’s position is becoming clearer.

On Saturday night, news emerged confirming that the Lilywhites have opened club-to-club talks with the Magpies, even jumping ahead of Arsenal and Man City in the queue for the opening bid.

However, unfortunately for De Zerbi’s team, their £80 million bid was rejected.

The Magpies are seriously unwilling to sell Tonali, and it will take a huge bid to convince them otherwise.

The asking price has always been placed at around £100m, and Spurs’ opening bid has been reduced.

Although Tottenham will have difficulties in negotiating with Eddie Howe’s side, David Ornstein has confirmed that they will do everything when it comes to personal terms in an attempt to secure the player’s purchase.

Tottenham are ready to throw ‘big money’ at Sandro Tonali

Speaking on the Athletic podcast, via Gary Ward, Ornstein confirmed that Tottenham are ready to offer Tonali a ‘big money’ contract to join them.

“There is an acceptance at St. James’s Park that Tonali can leave this summer, but the money has to be right,” he said.

“We think it’s around £100m, with a very significant wage demand.

“What I see happening here is Tottenham trying to get to the point where they know they can make an agreement with the player on a salary.

“I heard that they offered him a lot of money to join them.

“Also, the wage numbers I feel will take Tottenham to a place you didn’t use to see them going forward.”

A transfer fee in the region of £100m would well surpass Tottenham’s previous transfer record, and the wage package being discussed would represent a huge commitment.

Tonali is still one of Newcastle’s most valuable players, and is already on a contract believed to be worth £150,000-a-week, so Spurs will have to pay him more than that.

Since arriving in England football, the midfielder has made a name for himself at St James’ Park.

Before joining Newcastle, he spent three seasons with AC Milan and played a key role in their campaign to win the Serie A title in 2022.

Tonali has once again become a regular member of the Italian team, with Arsenal, City and Man United linked with the midfielder at various stages.

However, it is clear that Spurs are the team making the strongest push at the moment.
