The White Sox and the Cubs are among the teams that have shown interest in the Angels Reid Detmersreports Russell Dorsey of Yahoo! Sports. Halos has received calls from many competitors about the southpaw, one of the best controllable arms on the market.
Detmers returned the most of the starting five. A former top-10 pick, he flashed upside but struggled with inconsistency during his first few years. The Halos moved Detmers to the bullpen in 2025. He’s pitched well enough to earn another rotation look this season and play like a playoff-caliber starter.
The southpaw has a 4.05 earned run average in 21 appearances. Detmers struck out 28% of opponents while averaging his walks at a career-best 7.5% clip. Performance has been steadily increasing throughout the year, but he rebounded from a shaky start to July with his two best outings since the All-Star Break. Detmers totaled 11 1/3 frames of baseball and (a JJ Wetherholt homer) against the Tigers and Cardinals in the second half. He recorded 13 strikeouts with two walks.
Detmers and rotation mate José Soriano both are subject to arbitration through the 2028 season. The former is playing with a salary of $2.625MM, just over $775K of which will be owed after the deadline.
The Angels would want multiple top 100 prospects to part with two and a half years of affordable control over an above-average starter. They’re in a strange position with interim general manager John Mozeliak in charge of their deadline, but a recent report suggests they’re more open to negotiations for their control players than in years past. The two aforementioned starters and shortstop Zach Neto they can be their top trade recruits and can revive a weak farm system if the Halos are truly open to rebuilding.
Both Chicago teams are eligible to add a starter. Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer has talked about their need to rotate for months. A controllable starter would be a good fit for the Sox, who are ahead of schedule in a rebuild and perhaps don’t want to use too much young recruiting talent. They are linked to Clay Holmeslease considering he will decline his $12MM player option. That suggests they aren’t closing the door on future free agents, but are hoping this is the start of a multi-year window. The Sox could also use a top reliever and a stopgap catcher after the loss Kyle Teel a sprained ankle that will sideline him in September.
