Chelsea are opening preliminary talks with Liverpool target Marco Palestra

According to reports from Sky Italia, as relayed by Football Italia, Chelsea have opened ‘preliminary discussions’ with representatives of the Palestra in their pursuit of defenders.

The 21-year-old is regarded as one of the most promising young defenders to emerge from Italian football, with Atalanta valuing him in excess of £43 million.

Although naturally a right winger, his versatility and athleticism have attracted the attention of several clubs around Europe, with Chelsea believed to be among those evaluating a move.

Sky say initial contact has already taken place between the player’s camp and the London club, but talks are understood to be exploratory rather than advanced.

However, the fact that Chelsea have moved to establish a connection shows their level of interest.

The Palestra has received a lot of praise after joining the scene on loan from Cagliari, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig calling him a ‘perfect’ defender.

A number of clubs are monitoring his progress and there is a growing belief that he could eventually become a top-flight player.
