Chelsea bid for ‘special’ Roma star to satisfy ‘unhappy’ Xabi Alonso

Chelsea’s summer rebuild under Xabi Alonso is gaining momentum, as the Blues continue to explore several areas of the transfer market as they prepare for the 2026/27 campaign.
Last week’s reports from major outlets suggested that Chelsea are still active in their pursuit of young talent, while also looking for players who can strengthen the first team immediately.
talkSPORT’s Ben Jacobs reported that Alonso’s side were involved in the race for Aston Villa star Morgan Rogers, while Stamford Bridge insider Simon Phillips said last month they had held internal talks about Premier League striker Brian Brobbey.
Chelsea have also been credited with an interest in AIK’s future Zadok Yohanna.
Sky Germany journalist, Florian Plettenberg, reported this week that the Blues have entered the race to win a top-class player, although Newcastle United and Brighton are also firmly in the picture.

Chelsea are now in talks to sign the ‘quality’ free agent wanted by Man City
The Blues have opened negotiations.
While much of the focus has been on external reinforcements, it appears that Chelsea are also exploring their goalkeeper options as well.
The west Londoners were repeatedly linked with a move for Mike Maignan from AC Milan last summer, amid doubts over Robert Sanchez at the time, with reliable sources claiming that the Rossoneri and Chelsea could not reach an agreement after negotiations.
Maignan has also been mooted as a target for Chelsea this summer as Alonso looks to improve his goalkeeping options, but the Frenchman is clearly not their only viable option.
Chelsea receive Roma response after making £43m bid for Mile Svilar
According to Italian journalist Claudio Raimondi, the Blues recently made an offer for Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar, but saw the Serie A club reject it.
The report claims that Chelsea have submitted a bid worth €50 million, which equates to £43 million. It is said that Roma have rejected this proposal as they want to keep one of their most important players.
That is significant value for the goalkeeper and underlines how highly Chelsea rate the Serbian international.
Svilar has developed into one of Serie A’s best goalkeepers since becoming Roma’s first-choice goalkeeper.
After arriving in Italy from Benfica, he initially had to wait for opportunities, but his performances in the last two seasons have changed his reputation and attracted the attention of several European clubs.
The Roma’s decision to reject this request is understandable.
The 26-year-old, who Tiago Pinto called a ‘very special’ player, has become a key figure at the Stadio Olimpico and is widely regarded as one of the cornerstones of the club’s long-term project.
Although Roma have faced well-documented financial pressures in recent transfer windows, selling Svilar has never seemed to be among their preferred options.
Raimondi’s report suggests Chelsea’s interest remains genuine despite the setback, with new manager Alonso said to be ‘unhappy’ with their current squad.
The Blues have a number of goalkeepers on their books, but there has been ongoing speculation about whether the club could enter the market for another top-class option.
A bid of this size shows that Chelsea are willing to invest heavily if they target a player who can be a long-term solution.
The report also notes that Chelsea have considered other high-quality goalkeepers as they assess the market, including Maignan again, highlighting the importance they place on the position heading into the new season.
For Chelsea fans, the interest in Svilar is another sign of the club’s ambition under Alonso.
The Spaniard is expected to play a major role in shaping recruitment decisions, and the pursuit of a goalkeeper who has excelled in one of Europe’s top leagues fits the profile of the player Chelsea are aiming for.
Whether the Blues come back with an improved offer remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, Roma have made their position clear by rejecting a £43 million bid.
However, Chelsea’s willingness to put that kind of money on the table suggests their goalkeeper search is being taken seriously, and Svilar remains a name to watch as the summer window continues.
