Avalanche May Unlock Another Variable for Stanley Cup Success – Hockey Writers – Colorado Avalanche

Some expected the current series between the Colorado Avalanche and Minnesota Wild to be a battle, putting the winner in the driver’s seat of the Stanley Cup. And while there were battles, the Avalanche prevailed in Game 4 to put the Wild on the brink of elimination.
The Avalanche have a lot going for them, but one aspect of their game has come to the fore in recent wins. A team known for their incredible skill and strong forecheck, the Avalanche have given their game another dimension.
Physicality Was Key to Game 4 Win
Although there were a few overzealous points, the Avalanche asserted their physical dominance in winning Game 4. Their 32-game performance showed they can get down and dirty when it matters most, and the Wild didn’t seem to have an answer for it.
When asked about the game, head coach Jared Bednar had this to say: “I think there are two things. One, that’s what the game needs at this time of year, right? The biggest change from regular season hockey to playoff hockey is the buy-in and commitment to defense on every team,” Bednar said. “And the second thing is fitness and physicality. It will go. Space is small, space is small. If you want to check the puck back, you have to be physical. If you want to hold on to the puck, you have to be physical.”
Josh Manson has been one of the most visible leaders of this movement. But Bednar preached nuance to the team’s physicality, limiting the Wild’s ability to control puck possession. Uncontrolled aggression will only cause problems, but Avalanche has control while revitalizing the body. It proved to be a recipe for playoff success.
The Avalanche Still Don’t Have An A+ Game
It could be argued that the Avalanche haven’t played their best game yet. They have had some high-scoring stories, such as a stunning 9-6 blowout in Game 1. They have consolidated their defensive efforts, eliminating the Los Angeles Kings during a first-round sweep.
That said, the Avalanche are still looking for more from key contributors. Selke Trophy finalist Brock Nelson has just two goals and three points in eight games. Cale Makar slowed down a bit from a strong first round. Ross Colton has only one goal so far.
The Avalanche are 7-1 in the playoffs so far, with one spot coming in Game 3 of the series. If the Avalanche play well and still have a lot of room to improve, just imagine how scary it will be.
Programming Changes Seem to Work
Ultimately, even the best teams need to shake things up sometimes. Changing goals and going with MacKenzie Blackwood proved to be effective. Sam Malinski missed Game 4 but it would be great to have him back.
Then again, that’s one of the main things that makes Avalanche so deadly. They can roll guy after guy, they can all get the job done. It’s the hallmark of a championship team and the Avalanche have it in spades.
