Aston Villa are on the verge of a deal to sign former Tottenham star Emerson Royal

Aston Villa are yet to steal the headlines this summer, but that’s not what they want to try. The Villans have set their sights on potential additions ahead of their return to the Champions League.

In terms of spending, although they still have SCR (previously, PSR) issues, European qualifications should at least allow them to invest wisely if not more.

The club have just five days to sell the Argentine who is keen to join Aston Villa

Unai Emery’s side are rivals.

There are also question marks about the future of certain stars that could change that spending money. Arsenal are among the clubs still interested in Morgan Rogers and are likely to make the same amount as the £100m Manchester City spent on Jack Grealish several months ago.

Meanwhile, Emiliano Martinez is also one to watch as Juventus look for their next No. The Argentine bid a shock farewell at the end of the 2024/25 campaign before staying in the Midlands. However, this time his farewell could be real.

Before that potential sale takes place, those in the Midlands can welcome their first signing of the summer in the form of a former Premier League star.

Aston Villa are on the verge of signing a defender

Unai Emery looks set to make his first signing of the summer. According to Brazilian journalist Venê Casagrande, as reported by Sports Witness, Aston Villa are on the verge of signing Emerson Royal from Flamengo.

The Villans have reportedly upped their offer, to €10m (£9m), after initially bidding around €9m (£8m) to sign the Tottenham defender.

Although Royal is not the name many expected to walk through the door at Villa Park this summer, he will provide vital depth in the back line, with his ability to play at center back and right back.

There are expected to be no problems when it comes to personal terms, either. Villa’s second offer has reportedly been well received in the Royal camp, as he prepares to join the Premier League for the first time since leaving Spurs in 2024.

Why Emerson Royal makes sense for Aston Villa

It’s far from a blockbuster move, but Unai Emery will be the first to insist that the likes of Royal will prove vital at Villa Park. The defender will provide vital depth and compete with Matty Cash as the games come harder and faster next season.

Aston Villa have learned the hard way that squad depth is vital to their Champions League final. It is not a lesson they have to learn twice.

Royal already have Premier League and Champions League experience and should have no problem returning to English football in a reserve role.

However, the important thing is that his arrival should only be the beginning. If there is money to be spent by Villa, they should not hesitate to bring Emery back full time this summer.
