England’s preparations for the World Cup semi-final against Argentina have become questionable following FIFA’s choice of referee.
With Thomas Tuchel’s side trying to reach their first final since 1966 and the defending champions chasing back-to-back titles, every decision in Atlanta will be closely watched.
Argentina’s playoffs have already drawn complaints about VAR and refereeing, so the appointment was always going to attract attention.
However, previous links between the elected official and games involving Lionel Messi fueled the debate before kick-off.
The FIFA nomination adds to the pre-match controversy
According to the Daily Mail, concerns about bias have grown after FIFA appointed Ismail Elfath to referee Wednesday’s semi-final.
The Moroccan-born American will be assisted by Corey Parker and Kyle Atkins, while Italy’s Maurizio Mariani has been named fourth.
ESPN also confirmed the appointment of Elfath for this game that will be held at Atlanta Stadium. He has hosted three games in this World Cup, although it will be the first time he has included England or Argentina.
Elfath served as fourth official when Argentina beat France in the 2022 World Cup final.
He has also watched many of Inter Miami’s games since Messi moved to MLS, including the 2023 League Cup final against Nashville.
Calling him Messi’s “favorite referee”, however, is still a media interpretation rather than evidence of improper relationships or biased decision-making.
Officials will be scrutinized ahead of Argentina’s match with England
A wider concern arises from the controversy surrounding Argentina’s victories over Egypt and Switzerland.
Reuters reported that rivals have repeatedly complained about decisions favoring Argentina, although former FIFA referee Christina Unkel said the incidents she reviewed did not clearly indicate foul play.
FIFA referees chief Pierluigi Collina also dismissed allegations of bias, insisting that World Cup officials work independently and questioning their integrity without evidence is unacceptable.
Elfath should be judged on Wednesday’s game rather than his earlier contact with Messi.
Referees often oversee the same top players, especially if they work in a league where those players are competing against each other.
However, FIFA must understand why the nomination caused panic. After several controversial decisions involving Argentina, even the right call but a sideline one could spark another major backlash.
