Injuries come a lot in April, but the AL East appears to be snakebitten to start the season. The Blue Jays have had several key players go down since the start of Spring Training. The Orioles are missing most of their young offensive linemen. The Rays and Red Sox haven’t had any debilitating absences, but both teams have been missing key pieces.
Here’s a list of injury updates from around the corner, starting with the dominant AL tournament…
In Toronto
- Trey Yesavage (shoulder) will make another rehab start Tuesday at Triple-A. The goal will be 75 pitches, so that “he heard that again,” manager John Schneider told the media, including Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi.
- Jose Berrios (elbow) will resume his next rehab on Wednesday. He threw 38 pitches in his first outing on Thursday. The righty allowed five earned runs over 2 2/3 innings. A veteran Shane Bieber (front) threw the bull on Friday. Just moved to IL for 60 days. To eliminate circulation damage, Cody Ponce underwent surgery to repair his ACL and hopes to return to Spring Training in 2027. (h/t to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic for listing the injury in one post)
- On the batting side, George Springer (the toe) is still hitting but will continue to run. The same goes Addison Barger (ankles), although he is expected to start running next week. Springer is on his way back ahead of Barger and may not need a rehab assignment, according to Sportsnet’s Arden Zwelling.
In Baltimore
- Jackson Holiday will be on the High-A Frederick roster this weekend, the team announced. An infielder is recovering from a hamate fracture. He was recently released from rehab assignment after suffering wrist pain at Triple-A Norfolk. Holliday hit a .167/.239/.214 line in 11 games with the Tides. The absence of the second baseman led to it Jeremiah Jackson. The 26-year-old reliever had a 151 wRC+ heading into Friday’s action. That’s likely to go up after a three-homer lead against the Rangers.
- Adley Rutschman ran, hit, and held a bullpen session on Friday, reports Jake Rill of MLB.com. The catcher has cuts on his ankle. Rutschman is eligible to return on Tuesday, but may need rehab games first.
- And from Rill, the outfielder Tyler O’Neill he is not ready to return from the 7 day conference IL. He has been out since April 8. “There are still some boxes to check and go from there,” manager Craig Albernaz said.Obviously, in conflict, it’s very touch and go.”
Tampa Bay
- The right hand Edwin Uceta is still dealing with issues with his shoulder, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. He will be closed for the next few days. After scoreless frames to start his rehab career, Uceta has allowed three earned runs on six hits in his last two appearances.
- Gavin Lux was slated to return to Triple-A on Friday, Topkin said yesterday. However, the former Dodger was not on the Durham lineup tonight. Lux is working his way back from a shoulder injury. He has not played since Saturday after injuring his ankle.
Boston
- Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com went through a few health updates for the Red Sox. The right hand Cutter Crawford he has not yet started throwing and may need an MRI following the elbow pain. He missed all of 2025 with knee and wrist injuries. Crawford gave up five earned runs over three innings of work in his first outing on Saturday. He reported the elbow issue shortly thereafter.
- The liberator Justin Slate he won’t be back from his oblique strain when he starts qualifying on Monday. Now he has just restarted the pitching, forward manager Alex Cora. It is not clear when Slaten will move on to rehab.
- Left hand Patrick Sandoval is expected to begin another overhaul Sunday at Triple-A. He is coming back from UCL surgery. Sandoval has thrown 63 and 59 pitches in his first two rehabs.
- Sandoval’s teammate with Worcester, Tyler Uberstinewas placed on IL for shoulder pain. The righty was promoted earlier this season there Johan Oviedo he went down by pressing with his elbow. Uberstine allowed a run over 2 2/3 innings in his major league debut, taking the loss against the Padres.
- Romy Gonzalezone update on the batting side, we have yet to resume baseball activities. He had shoulder surgery in March. Gonzalez is on IL for 60 days and won’t be back until late May at the earliest.
