A traumatized Lionel Messi warns Argentina after the struggle against Cape Verde in the World Cup: ‘There were many problems’

Lionel Messi criticized Argentina’s ball-keeping and pressing after the managers were added by Cape Verde as the youngsters threatened a surprise shock at the 32nd round of the 2026 World Cup.

Captain Messi gave his team an early goal with a fine control and finish from Lisandro Martinez’s pass, but the World Cup holders equalized twice and were only beaten by Diney’s 111th-minute corner kick from the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner.

“We thought that would allow us to find our rhythm and relax but it was the complete opposite,” Messi said after scoring a record goal in the eighth consecutive World Cup game.

“We did the most difficult part: scoring the first goal. We lost the ball, we sat back and failed to press well. They used their strength.”

Analysis of Argentina vs Cape Verde: Messi on the ‘important’ factor

The 39-year-old player revealed that Cape Verde was in possession of the European titles Spain and Uruguay were once world champions when they were playing in the group stage without being defeated.

“We knew it was going to be difficult,” he said. “It’s a playoff tournament and nobody gives you anything for free.

“This is what this World Cup teaches you: everything is evenly matched, it’s very complicated, and every game will be very difficult.

“We made a great effort, as always, the important thing now is to rest, think about what’s next, take away the good and fix the bad – of which there was a lot.

“We used set pieces, which is something we haven’t done well recently, in matches like this it’s important.

“We have good headers, fortunately we were able to use them well. We have been working on it and it will be important to be strong in that area as well.

“It’s important in a competition like this, too [against Cape Verde] that was shown.”

2026 World Cup: Lionel Messi Injuries

Inter Miami’s Messi had a swollen forehead after being caught by an opponent’s knee, but the final’s top scorer took solace in seeing his side beat the impressive Blue Sharks late in the game.

“This team has always proven itself: it competes and will continue to compete until the end,” he commented on the island nation.

“We couldn’t press them well.

Argentina vs Cape Verde: Scaloni praises character

Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni aptly described Sidny Lopes Cabral’s extra-time goal against his side as “amazing”.

“I want to congratulate our opponents,” said Scaloni. “They showed that they are a big team. We showed our character.

“The game was very difficult, but you always have to bring out the best and this team never gives up.”

Scloni admitted he would talk to his players about “negative aspects”. “But we are focused on the good, the endless energy,” he added.

“We used our opportunities in important moments. We always came out to win the game. There is always something that needs to be done, but it is important for the team to respond in difficult moments.”

“We can argue whether we played well or badly, but this team is not afraid to manage the game.”
